Here I set wondering (very rainy outside) how the chainsaw hobbyist members here maintain those vintage Mc Culloch’s and Stihl’s and the rotation from the shelf to the wood and back to the shelf of those saws. How do you maintain the time and date to which saw has been run. Looking for ideas. I have been attaching a hang tag to the handle, recording the date it was last run.

Log book of some sort. That is what I do for maintenance records of things like mower service , splitter oil changes and service etc. This way I can log hours and add some notes as well. Doesn’t,t have to be anything fancy .

I only rotate through 7 saws. I run ethanol free fuel with Techron Motorsport fuel treatment. I just make sure they are all ran at least once a year.

No 'vintage' but have 5 regular runners. Some may be idle for 2-4 months at a time depending on season and what I get into. The canned fuel gives peace of mind on those not run at least monthly. Currently my 550 could use a little trigger time. It's been being left behind because I've been too cheap to buy a new bar for it.

Truth be known I don't really use mix unless I know I'm burning multiple tanks. That doesn't happen too often these days partly by design. Not met a lone tree yet that I can't strip clean and buck skid logs from off of one tank. Bucking the rounds is usually it's own seperate affair. I never let myself pile up enough logs to need a lot of bucking time. Been using the 6100 for making rounds lately because it'll hold damm near a quart of fuel.

I buy a 5 gallon can of either VP racing 94 octane small engine fuel or Sunoco Optima 95. I mix it all at once and it lasts me 2-3 years in the three saws I run it in and the 1/5th scale RC car. Its good for 5 years in the original container and 2 in the machine according to the manufacturer.

E-free pump gas gets mixed a gallon at a time as needed.

5 gallons VP here as well. To me it is worth it.

Any reason you don't buy it ready mixed? I see they offer the 5gal in 40 and 50:1. They used to put Motul oil in but now have 'their own' JASO FD oil.

Yes. Because I run my preferred oil at a ratio I prefer. I don't pay attention to the Jaso ratings anyway as they don't verify the oil blenders claims. In addition, in the various tests I've done on around 40 oils, there are many oils that outperform FD rated oils in cleanliness and wear protection. Red Armor is the standout in FD rated oils. Its as good as the best Motorsports oils I've tested.

Same here as far as different ratios plus maybe a little straight for wither storage in a couple things.

I usually run the push mower empty and dump a quart of trufuel in it, run it for several minutes then in the shed it goes. I have a mantis mini tiller with a honda 4 stroke engine. That has only seen canned fuel. I might go through a quart every two years in it. Lol

Oddly enough, I need to do this to all my saws this weekend. My plan? Dump existing fuel from all saws, pour into Can Am Defender for proper disposal. 91 Efree 32:1 Dom, Techron, run several minutes, to purge, drain fuel, shelve saw…

    I don't drain anymore. I haven’t had
e-free pump gas go bad with PRI-G or techron powersports. Not in a year anyway. I have one item that gets ran once a year for about 30 minutes. A hedge trimmer for our 10' tall Zebra grass. Always starts and runs like it should. Fuel left in it.

I have 22 saws and am having a hard time remembering (no y’all I ain’t labeling chit) when the fuel was poured in. This way here, I wont have 3-4 gallons in saws with no age/mix to remember.

About the only saws I see leaving here will be whatever I get running / cutting from the pile O pulan saws. And maybe the 241 if I really like the new Echo.
