At work we have a need for a smaller diesel engine. Something in the range of 35HP minimum up to just shy of 100HP. The boss has determined, and I wholeheartedly agree that the 70ish HP Perkins diesel in my wood chipper would be ideal. Most chippers in the 12” or so range, have engines mounted on a separate frame that slides to adjust the drive belts. The radiator is also mounted to the separate frame and with a clutch mounted on the engine it would be very easy to pick the entire unit off of the chipper chassis and put it into our application. So here’s the dilemma, I won’t allow him to cannibalize the engine off my chipper, without a suitable replacement. Not much in the way of timber in this area, which means not many used chippers available. And, last but not least, the boss is a Charlie cheap ash, who has a hard time making a decision and then taking action before it’s too late. So if anyone knows of a clapped out chipper with a good engine, let me know. Not opposed to something else like a light tower or generator or some such, but a power unit off a chipper seems like the easiest option. If you know of something let me know, I’m well aware that a fair road trip would likely be necessary. But anything within 10-12 hours each way wouldn’t necessarily be out of the question
You might try looking on Big Iron, Machinery Trader or Ritchie Brothers auction site. I know the RB has auction sites all across the US, they have one in Lincoln, NE. They get a lot of light towers from the oil patches & other miscellaneous equipment. Very likely they will have some chippers at different locations.
Lots of light towers https://www.rbauction.com/heavy-equ...-81C7-DD73-785CA7746592&freeText=Light+towers They had 3 chippers listed as well for the KC, MN, SD, NE auctions.
Would that be big enough for your project? Those engine are only 15-20HP IIRC...and may have an odd crankshaft, as far as how they attach to whatever they're powering?
Good point, I was thunking they were a higher rated hp. I suppose it may depend on the size/output of the tower for engine specs but probably not much over 20hp from my brief investigation.
I watch Bid Iron religiously, and keep a pretty good eye on machinery trader. Kinda forgot about RB, I used to monitor them pretty closely also. A light tower would probably work, but a clutch would really be nice. I also have a hard time with the way they advertise the horse power on light towers and generators. Why can’t they just list the HP instead of putting it in KW hp.
