Like most young men, I enjoyed the great outdoors. Building forts, camping, digging holes, exploring the woods. I enjoyed all the cowboy shows on television. Seeing the quick lever action rifles quickly dispatch the bad guys.

It was around the age of 10 that I got my first "real" gun. A Crossman 760 Pump master. Like many bb/pellet guns of the era, it required multiple pumps of the fore stock for maximum power, maxing out around 700 feet per second. It had a plastic stock meant to look like wood. Shot .177 caliber pellets and bb's. As a young boy walking around the woods, I felt like a regular Daniel Boone.

Reading through an outdoor magazine I started seeing "Big Boy" pellet rifles like the Benjamins. They weren't cheap, but they advertised blistering speeds and had the "look" of a real gun. I could only dream about owning such a fine specimen!!!

A few years later...around the age of 14-15 I finally was able to get my hands on my very own Benjamin 397A. I had a coworker from a neighboring state order it for me as they wouldn't ship it to my house. As I first held it in my hands I exclaimed "WHAT A BEAUTY!!!".... it send those .177 pellets downrange with a real wallop, and had a beautiful Walnut stock. Squirrels were shaking in their trees across the county.

Around this same time I got my first rimfire. A used Marlin 60. Along with the Ruger 10/22, the Marlin 60 was one of the most common 22 rifles to ever be produced. Its 17 round tubular magazine and semi automatic action was something out of a dream. Being used to my single shot, 11-14 Foot Pounds of Energy air rifles that sent a 7-8 grain lead pellet downrange at 700-800 feet per second, this 22 put out an amazing performance. Quick succession shots one after the other sending 32 grain Copper Plated Hollow Point Stingers down range at an incredible 1600 feet per second. Producing around 160-180 foot pounds of energy. It was literally over 10 times the power of the Benjamin. Many squirrels lives were lost in the pursuit of me and the Marlins friendship. Many boards were destroyed...many smiles were had!

Years went by and I got busy with work, school, starting a family, paying bills. My love for firearms never left, but it had to put on the backburner...

Well into adulthood, after many years of wanting a handgun, I finally purchased my first two. A 22 Ruger and a 9mm Hellcat. Mainly for self defense, but also for a little fun. I started falling back in love with all the offerings, much as I'd done all those years ago as a young man. One thing led to another, and a Mossberg 590A1 somehow ended up in my home, then upon looking and drooling over the Henry website, the new Henry Homesteader semi auto carbine caught my eye. A sharp looking 9mm carbine with a 10 round magazine, and the option to use Glock mags. I could resist, so I bought one. Then a "64" gun...gun safe, then a Mini 14, then a lever action 22 mag Henry, then a few others....

I'm hopeful my sickness is over and I can stop purchasing new firearms. Just enjoy the ones I have!

My next goal is to stock up my ammo to "acceptable numbers" and set up my official backyard range on my 21 acres.

    So that's my story....

That's a horrible thing to wish for...and a misdiagnosis! That Homesteader's a pretty neat little gun....

My daughter got one for Christmas from the fil...either last Christmas or year before. I just changed the magwell to glock a couple weeks ago, but haven't shot it yet with the glock mags. I may or may not have gotten several glock mags from Sawdust Man ......

Are you just running with the factory sights, or did you put some kind of optic on there?

I just run with the stock ghost ring sight. I like them a lot for these short range weapons like this and my 12 gauge Mossberg 590A1. My Ruger Mini 14, and Henry Frontier 22mag lever gun also have ghost ring sights. They seem to be pretty popular.
