Route 66 is now 98 years old



U.S. Route 66 or U.S. Highway 66 was one of the original highways in the United States Numbered Highway System. It spans 2,400 miles (3,940 km), crosses eight states and three time zones, and enlists you for at least three weeks. The epitome of American driving holidays, Route 66 takes you east to west, from Chicago to Santa Monica, Los Angeles, tracing the development of the pioneering country. The original road no longer exists unbroken, but as a road trip the route holds strong. It will take you through small-town America and past some of the most obscure attractions in the country

Sixty-one years ago yesterday onlookers, unaware of what had just happened seconds before, wait to see President Kennedy pass by. The police appear to be unaware, too. Kennedy's limousine can be seen as it is speeding up, having just passed underneath the overpass. Also visible under the Hertz Rent A Car sign is the Texas school book depository, from which Oswald allegedly fired. I can read the time on the Rent A Car sign as 12;30

 

The "Do Drop Inn Cafe" located in Crane, Texas, 1939. Thats a very catchy name for sure.

Look what I found!

Way, I mean WAY back in the hills where it gets a little scary!

 

I'm not sure it's "our" skeeter, I didn't smell any meat cooking.

 

Wonder if Ben owns the club and diner also?

 

Somethings never change, a wedding dress circa 1910 photo of a new bride wearing the wedding dress her mother had worn at her wedding roughly 20 years before, in 1891. What a veil! Sheer to the floor (it appears) with deep lace borders. Combined with the heavy satin dress and more lace, this was a costly gown. Very expensive then and very expensive today.

 

We had a Dew Drop In tavern in Pigeon Falls, WI back in the 50's and 60's. We would take the hind feet from pocket gophers we trapped and get our bounty there.
