Had a water softener at my old place and it removed tons of iron from the well water. We also used the pellets designed for high iron content. I think part of the equation is the PH of the water (or maybe we had a special softner - IDK, Culligan put it in for us after testing the water). All I know is the water was literally orange when it came out of the tap. We tried shocking the well but that didn't work well. Using the softner, the water was much better. It didn't remove it all, but probably 95% - enough that we didn't have an issue drinking it or giving it to our pets.

That Culligan lasted forever. It was over 20 years old when I left that house and only had to have one repair in all that time. Definitely couldn't complain about it.

It does not remove sulfur smell, which we would get when the water table was super high.

Good filter before softener can limit sulfur smell not erase it … close to lake increase sulfur in well

my water softener GE brand with regular salt removed rust here…

Caffeine! A full week off! Yeah! :dancer:

This morning I’m going to get back to work at a project I started the other day in the barn. The remaining chickens, and the outdoor coop, were given to friends who have just started to raise chickens.

Now I’m taking apart the chicken pen in the barn to get that space back. It will be good to have for indoor storage.

The stairs will be reused up against the wall of the tack room. Well, I’m hoping I can figure that out anyway. :sherlock:

We used a dedicated charcoal filter for the kitchen sink. But even that would get saturated and ended up with enough smell to notice. But then, I can't stand the smell of the dish rag either....

Making some progress on this project amongst a few other things going on……… IMG_5782.jpeg IMG_5784.jpeg
The old ramp is now gone and a new platform built at the top. Hopefully I can make the stairs work along this wall.

That's what Culligan told us. It was suggested we put a softener after the Iron Curtain to take care of the hard water but we couldn't afford both systems. Hard water I can live with, not so much with iron. The original system at the farm had promaganate (sp), purple powder that went into a tank. That didn't work well but it's what the house had when we moved in there.
Is that a softener? The iron system is sand based, it traps the iron particles then flushes them out when it regenerates.
The present system has been in use 27 years, no problems..yet.

That's interesting about the PH of the water and the special pellets. I don't remember either of those being mentioned by either of the water system guys but I've slept since then :) Time to do some sleuthing.

Very nice. I love the colour of it. Is it a stain or the natural colour of the wood?

Natural cherry. It will darken some over time.
