    I picked up a 2022 DR K28 kinetic splitter on FB Marketplace last Friday for 300 bucks......

    The catch is it needs a new pinion gear and rack gear due to negligent misuse. Otherwise the machine is like brand new.

    The bad part is.....those two parts are listed online for almost 500 bucks! So I'm gonna do some experimentation and ask a local machine shop what it'd cost to have them made. I even thought about making a shade tree repair on the gears with my welder and die grinder, it's just a handful of chewed teeth. What have I got to lose?

    I bought a smaller one (16") a couple years ago with the exact same problem...works ok as long as you split wood that is shorter than where the bad teeth are...I only have about $100 wrapped up in it so far and was also considering some diy repairs, as the rack gear for this one is NLA...thought about ordering something from Grainger or someplace too...but the whole thing has just been on the back burner for a while now. There is a weld shop in Akron that claims they can repair things like that.
    It's electric powered so it's really a pretty quiet way to split!

    I don't entirely disagree, but I think in this case if anything he'd want to anneal the whole gear afterwards so the built up weld wouldn't be so brittle. If the gear is made from 4140 steel or similar then the welded areas would probably be 50 something Rockwell. Drawing it down into the low-mid 40s would be a good compromise between hardness and durability. This is only a wood splitter too, and it's easy to get lost in the weeds trying to apply industrial standards to backyard repairs :)

    I agree. Best to have hard teeth and tough but ductile support.

    I don't believe rack gears are generally all that hard...surface hardened for wear resistance maybe...

    Pre-hard 4140 is. Then you can buy 4140 annealed which is low 20s IIRC. Or you can also buy straight 4140, with no heat treat which is close to dead soft like cold/hot rolled steel.

    Ring gear teeth get welded up for a quick repair on a semi regular basis. If, the parts are shippable reasonably, I’ll weld them up for you.
