Fresh cut right down the street from my place. Big gnarly thing. Not sure if it was fully dead but some punky limbs. Was on its way out. Grabbed all the good limb wood. Left the punky stuff and a few logs pinned under the trunk.
Pic after I was done. IMG_6338.JPG Maybe a face cord for the score. IMG_6339.JPG IMG_6340.JPG Split it all right off the truck after. Some general cordage IMG_6342.JPG Some nuggets and bundle wood splits that went next door. IMG_6341.JPG I like these quick park and cut scores.

Beautiful stuff Brad. You seem to acquire it quite a bit on your scrounging journeys. That's one type of wood I wish I encountered more.

Outstanding! I harvested a lot of it two summers ago and will reap the benefits this winter.

It's so weird seeing trees cut and just laying around there. It doesn't really happen here much. Once in a while but for most part unless in rural area the tree service guys make all the wood disappear.

That main stem would be gnarly to cut up. Crotches everywhere.

Good looking score! We seem to have a lot of silver maple around my area, i think they planted a ton when the area was developed. Now they're at the end of the life cycle and coming down. Seems like a decent wood, but dries light? I had a stack that got some discoloration, but it was in the shade so maybe that didn't help. How do you all get it to season well?

Four most common maples in my area are silver, red, Norway and sugar from lowest to highest btu value.
Silvers commonly seen as a yard plantings and we have a lot ending their life cycle as well. They do grow wild here but cant say I've seen one in person. Dries the fastest of all the maples and yes it is light when dry. Great shoulder season wood.

Dry it like any other wood. Split, stack, top cover and let mother nature dry it out with wind, sun and time. Discoloring is kind of normal for drying wood. It could be ready in a short amount of time under ideal drying conditions. Six months even.

Really love the smell of maple in my stove. I've only burnt silver here and it's like you said, yard trees bought from the nurseries that are hybrids that don't live too long.
