Just got these in this morning. Figured I'd share a few pictures and profile comparisons. First is FE8 and Ol' No.7. Second is FE6 and FE8. Third is Fiskars 8 lb, Ol' No.7, and Council Tool 8 lb maul.
I like the looks of that 7lb maul! I may have to get one of these as well. I like council tools quite well
Sorry about the absence. I have not tried them yet. I'm going to scrape the handles and put BLO on them this weekend. So, next week I'll give them a run.
You're asking the wrong guy that question. I know nothing about axes compared to a lot of folks on here. Mine are used for splitting firewood, camping, a little bushcraft and things like that. I don't even use axes to pound wedges. Ask that question in a new thread and I bet you'll get tons of insight.
amazing how many different versions of axes and mauls there are !! the last time I used a maul was a "Monster Maul " when I was a teenager sold enough firewood and bought a splitter I still have it I use it to hold the office door open on a windy day . I have a lot of respect for you guys and gals who split by hand but just seeing them makes my beat up shoulders hurt JB
Yeah, there's tons of versions and variations, that's for sure! I've never used one of those Monster Mauls, but they look miserable. Lol I'm probably 5 years ahead on wood. So, I never have to scramble. But, I like splitting wood by hand, for now. I saw a documentary years ago, about an old man in his 80's (it may have been duck Proenneke), but the person interviewing them asked how he's splitting wood by hand at 80. He said "I started before I was 80". There's some truth to that statement about many things, I think. I guess my thinking is, I want to be able to split by hand as long as possible, because I truly enjoy the process. I'm sure I'll get plenty of splitter time later in life. Should my enjoyment of hand splitting cease, I will have a splitter inbound ASAP.
That definitely makes a difference. I tried selling some surplus wood a few years back. Not many out here burn wood. But, I was only asking 200 bucks a cord. They were a mix of anything, except locust I kept. People would complain about the price. I then told them I split it all by hand and I'm making exactly 10 bucks an hour. Then all of a sudden I was "crazy". Pretty amazing how I went from pricing it too high, to being crazy for doing it all by hand, just like that. Lol Needless to say, I don't sell wood any more, except to one older couple. They are fantastic to deal with.
I only split for myself but 1 rotator cuff surgery and the other is torn beyond repair from beating the crap out of myself for to many years I use the splitters and do not lift to much anymore . I am sure racing motorcycles ,fixing heavy equipment and 18 years of climbing trees did not do them any favors JB
