We've been here 12 years and accumulated things. To boot, items we used to store in the garage or shed are in the house, the garage gets very cold and ruins things. Anyway we still have boxes in the garage from our old house we lived at for over 20 years Anyway, I just went through my closet. I have clothes that have hung in there for way too long but not worn. Cracks me up but kind of hurts my feelings, most of the donate pile is clothes from Christmas from my mother or Dad's wife that they bought for themselves and didn't fit into (I was thin for 50 years, both small sizes and oversized things looked nice on me). Not my style/uncomfortable nor something I would buy for myself. Last week I tossed coffee mugs I don't like, the stoneware ones. The stoneware ones are wide at the top, narrow at the bottom = easier to tip over, and we have a utensil somewhere leaves gray marks on the bottom and sides when eating soup from them. Next up is kiddo's Barbie collection. She has an old house someone gave to us uears ago, and a newer one we bought her years ago. And too many accessories (majority of which she made, like crafts and clay etc. Or even ((I was impressed, I was on single use eyedrop vials, she took the used vial, cut some off and put the tip back on-they look like tiny Coke/water bottles!!)). Dusty from storage the last couple years. Not sure if I'll offer them on FBM or toss.
Also, I tossed all our outdated spare/extra electronic plugs and wires, ethernet, phone chargers that are no longer used after we moved here. We now have another drawer full of them.
I've been trying to declutter a bit too. A couple of months ago I went thru the back bedroom that holds all my bookshelves, frestanding linen closet and a bunch of other stuff. I set a bunch of stuff out by the road to give away and collected some of the older hou-to books and took them to the transfer station paper recycling. Don't worry, those how-to books were old computer books like DOS, Windows 3.1 so I'm sure no one would ever have need for them. I got that room to the point that I can actually walk around it again. But there is still plenty to go. I need to clean off the shelf above my computer desk too. I mean Access 2007 and Sharepoint 2010 aren't exactly cutting edge technology anymore I also got some tool boxes to store all my Ryobi tools and gadgets. The basement shelves were overflowing. I've made some room and now most of my indoor Ryobi stiff is in one pile of boxes. I definitely need to go thru all of the old paint cans and dry up what I can (for taking to the transfer station), and hold the oil-based for taking to hazardous waste day (which is 1x/year). The areas I've worked in are much better than before, but if anyone came and saw those rooms, they would have no inkling I'd even touched them
I got rid of lots after the ornery one passed away but needed to do more. I just barely got started recently then I got married. Where will we put all her things? We've already donated a big bunch of stuff with more to go. But this sort of thing has to be done from time to time, even with the barns and garages.
I began actively cutting back intake of 'things' a few years ago. I do occasionally purge things, but am whittling it down to things that are useful and valuable, but have not been useful to me for some time. There are also the 'future things' that are collected. Things meant for future projects that may or may not ever see liftoff. The cutting back on intake has helped a bit. I've turned down a lot of free stuff past few years. I have been tenatively working on reorganizing my 'firearm/hunting related things' which are quite a lot of my clutter. Noticed recently that my woods working tools and co have been piling up. Lots of spares, extras. So when I puruse all my junk...I see a bunch of great camping gear that hasn't been used in years, I see hunting clothes and accessories that are only used occasionally, I see new clothing items still unworn (I'm that kinda guy...if I find pants/shirts I like...I get some extras and put them up for later), I see a cornicopia of 'nicnacks' and small items of all sorts, I see power tools that batteries are not made for anymore, I see a 'car care' set of shelves with all manner of polishes, waxes, cleaners and lubricants (have purged this before), I see stock motorcycle and buggy parts that were removed and replaced with aftermarket, I see old bedsheet sets that need to be cut into rags. Other than that stuff I'm in good shape. Honestly, a friend of mine kinda woke me up on the topic of 'collecting'. Watching his pile of things amass to incredible levels and seeing the impending and ongoing headaches associated with caught my attention. It doesn't seem like he owns all that stuff, but rather it owns him.
We declutter every year or so. It's quick and easy because we don't like clutter. We just offed a whole bunch of kitchen items we never use.
My problem is I save too many building materials. If I save this 2 by 2 piece of plywood I might not need to buy one some day. Multiply this by other lumber, sheet rock, various fasteners, etc.
She might get rid of the big George foreman next. She only uses it for bacon but I've started cooking it (bacon) in the traeger to keep the mess outside. Now I have that SnS grills 1/2 moon cast iron griddle / drip pan to try cooking bacon over charcoal too If I like.
We have a few things I know we have to get rid of. Old dinnerware has to go from the shelf of hardly / if ever used shelf. I think there might even be a Geo Foreman grill there too. This thread has me thinking about maybe doing some decluttering as well. Bacon , Since I have the blackstone griddle there is no turning back. I can throw on a whole pound and by the time I get the last slice on the first is about ready to flip. I "love " that thing! and no mess inside! There is a little clean-up so it doesn't rust but well worth it. Now I want a BLT!
I want to know why I load my truck bed up with Goodwill stuff or garbage every two months there are no open areas at the house yet. Its like it avalanche from everywhere else
I did that with a bunch of stuff in 2007-2009. During my divorce to Wife#1. I made the dumb mistake of tossing complete sets of primary and secondary needles as well as jets for the Rochester Quadrajet carbs… next up were complete sets of weights and springs for Delco HEI distributors… while I wholeheartedly support decluttering, don’t be dumb about some things.
My wife has said that maybe we need a Blackstone. I kinda agree. Lol. Problem is I'm going to run out of deck space.
I think decluttering should be an ongoing process. It was one of the projects I hoped to do during retirement. Now that I have been retired for almost a year, I find that I haven't progressed at all with this project. Maybe the new year.
I am constantly trying to declutter but my wife packs new stuff back in & them constantly wants to reorganize the house. Then babbles about wanting to live in a tiny house.
