Scrounge any wood at your local landfill or compost/recycling center FHC? Post your pics here.

Don't know if such a thread already exists, but ThomH123 suggested we needed a thread for such so here it is.

Some cherry from last week. Guy was unloading it while I was there. IMG_6263.JPG
Some cherry and a piece of HWBW from yesterday morning. While I was having lunch yesterday I took a ride to the other local dump (I scrounge from two) as I was only a mile away. Added some sugar maple. IMG_6293.JPG Cant believe someone cut the maple with an axe. IMG_6295.JPG Pine and other undesirable logs. IMG_6292.JPG Usually I don't get much but for a quick grab its worth the effort and adds up. I'm there already to get rid of stuff. Rare ill go just to scrounge.

And no, i'm not hoarding doo doo all you FHC wise guys! :picard:

Nice score Brad. I made my Saturday morning transfer station run this morning but only got four rounds of maple that were muddy. But I had met a gentleman at the transfer station last week who told me where he lives so I stopped by there. Allot of wood to be had. He is going to split the bigger stuff so as I said I will keep my eyes open IMG_6053.jpeg IMG_6054.jpeg IMG_6055.jpeg IMG_6056.jpeg IMG_6057.jpeg

Nice stuff there. How often do you stop by there to scrounge?

Nice idea. Strange concept to me as we have garbage pickup and most people around here keep wood, you never see free wood anywhere.

It is funny how often people throw away perfectly good firewood. I don’t go to the dump (transfer station) very often. But last time I went, there was a big stack of 18” long rounds next to a trash truck. I asked the driver if I could have them. He laughed and said that the excavator operator had already claimed them. He said the workers there get all of their firewood from the dump. He said I’d be lucky to ever find an unclaimed round. “Fair enough” I said. I’d do the same thing!

Never hurts to ask. Worst thing that can say is no. I get they okay from both places, just cant use a saw, although I did use the battery one last month when I found some Bradford pear logs. It was busy and I was "hidden" on the backside of the brush mound. :emb: Had to make a couple cuts to make them manageable size to load.

I keep an eye on the local tree dump. I make a circle through 2-3 times a week. Our village maintenance guy was a good friend and he often let me know when he thought there was a good score,( he wasn’t really keen on wood species though). He retired this spring. I know of at least two other wood burners that keep tabs on the place also. ( but one of them will burn about anything. I know for a fact that he cuts up and burns the old utility poles that the power company discards)

He burns the old tar coated utility poles? He’s asking for a chimney fire.

One "dump" I scrounge is just a transfer station with dumpsters. Trash, recycling, bulky items, and yard waste. The other is an actual log/brush dump where they grind it up on site.

Id do the same but one is only open mornings (yill 2 on Saturdays) and the other is a bit out of the way plus I often have work stuff in the truck or need it empty for material pick up. Maybe I'll make more of a habit of it once the colder weather comes in.

Im jealous of the scores found at the transfer stations you other hoarders get. Dont have that around here. The local landfill strongly discourages bringing logs etc... plus there's a local company that makes their own mulch. Its right along the highway. You should see the mountains of logs there. I try not to look at it when I pass by, it hurts my heart.

Are you allowed to scrounge there? Use a chain saw?
