The more I think about it, the more I think the 841 is to big for what I need at this time

That very well may be, but they aren't huge tractors...about 40 HP IIRC...modern 40 HP tractors are physically smaller though...

Yes, I think a physically smaller setup would fit my needs better.
Just eyeballing the 841 I'm not sure how well it would fit widthwise on my 18ft trailer. It's well under the weight rating, but that rear end is awful wide

I made this mistake, sort of. I needed a grapple in kinda a hurry so got the closest/ nearest one I could find. It’s a rock grapple and weighs 1000# pounds. But sometimes I get into a job with rip-rap ( busted concrete) and it’s ok for the smaller pieces

My advice, older Yanmar/Deere tractor. If you want one you will pass down, 20 (new generation 60’s-70’s) series Deere. Specifically the 820 or 1020 for your hp/size range.

Brush grapple my plates are about 6” apart.

rock grapple will have them at 3”.

the iron craft brush grapple I got is just shy of 500#. I only got the 66” wide one.

Yep, that’s pretty much what mine looks like. 72” it’s a thousand pounds maybe a bit more
I just got another tracked skid steer so at some point I’ll probably get a brush grapple for it. Then I can have a machine on the job to load logs and one back home to unload

The 4 speed was it's claim to fame over the 9N/2N that came before it! (those were 3 speed)

You'll have a hard time hiding an 841 if you intend to keep it at home on that .5 acre. But the problem is that you aren't going to find a semi-modern compact or sub-compact with a loader for under $5k.

I've done a fair bit of brush-hogging with an 8N and a 4ft cutter. It's not so bad for occasional use. The 8N has a very "usable" 3 pt hitch unlike most tractors from that era. A good running 8N (with an excellent tune-up for some extra ponies) would probably do OK on semi-maintained ground with a lighter 5 ft cutter and the appropriate amount of front-end ballast. It'll be a long day if you're mowing 10 acres with it though. You will need an over-running clutch for the PTO on any tractor you intend to brush-hog with that is not equipped with a live PTO. That will make the bush-hog much more usable, not to mention safer.

An 8N isn't a great choice for a loader tractor. If a lightweight loader on a tight budget is something you are interested in, maybe an old Massey-Ferguson (or Ford) utility/construction tractor or something like an IH/Farmall 504 (wide front) could work. But those aren't going to be easy to house on a suburban .5 acre lot either.

We live in a little farm town. A few folks got tractors sitting in their yards/driveways

I will, not sure, but assume it's an aftermarket upgrade?

    I will search the Google

Quick search says Sherman transmission, I will ask him the next time I talk to him

I have a 1985 JD 950 two wheel drive and a 1984 JD 950 four wheel drive with loader. I installed aftermarket power steering on the loader tractor a couple months ago. Power steering is almost a must for a loader tractor. They have been good firewood tractors for me. They are small enough that they get around in the woods easy and still light enough I can put one on my trailer and pull it with my half ton Suburban. With planning on hauling your tractor an hour and a half to your other property size matters.

Def not factory but there was a HUGE aftermarket for the 8N and similar machines. Sounds like it has a 3 speed aux transmission installed ahead of the main gearbox.
