I've heard a few times "worst hurricane in 100 years". WWW's Grandma (I call her my Grandma In Law, she embraced me and we became close, RIP Grandma Jeanne) has a tragic history-but turned out just fine. Grandma Jeanne was born April 1926 in Fla Keys, a couple weeks later a horrendous hurricane came through and wiped out the islands, their home blew away. Her mother, Emma, ended up in Norwalk Mental Hospital and lived there til she was 107 years old, or 2004. Then her Dad was killed when she was 4 years old. Emma's sister took the kids in, the Fla Keys still, Grandma Jeanne didn't like it so she did most her childhood in foster care. She said water in Key West was from rain collected on the roof and there were bugs in it, and milk down there was not real milk. It's almost 100 years since then. Wild!
LOL WW, I see you liked this post. Genealogy Not that you're interested but knowing your gene nut like me and SmokeyTheBear ... Emma was born Schmidt/Smith. Her mother after being widowed married Wallace/Wallach. She married Fred (Arthur Winifred Harrington)- Grandma Jeanne's Dad that died when she was 4, so her death cert is Emma F Harringon.
Never been to Key West or Jamaica, went to Grand Cayman twice, '09 & '13. I really like St Lucia too.
It's not for everyone, truly! But I find it to be a charming little Caribbean island in America. I will say it is expensive, but has nothing over Disney!
Most of it, yes. There's a few (small) rolling hills in horse farm country in the Gainesville vicinity.
