Last year the day after Labor Day my shed was stuffed, wood stacked on deck, stove/chimney cleaned and inspected. This year, NONE of it was done. Time to get on it!! So was my plan for the weekend. One of the many bosses I have. Wood moved to shed that holds just over 2.75 cord. Loaded w/ 2 cord BL. Half cord various oak, and rest various other species. Objective 1 done! Got the chimney cleaned (don't ask me why I wait until the end of summer, I just do) and stove ready to go. Objective 2 done! Objective 3 = fail! Didn't get the cord of wood stacked on the deck. I had some other honey do items and I had to go to a "Baby-Q" on saturday for my nephew and his wife. For those that aren't aware a Baby-Q is a baby shower but for guys too. Beer, pork BBQ, more beer and football. I was kind of complaining that I didnt want to go, because it was almost the entire day saturday and I have plenty to do. BUT Im glad I did. Turns out my nephews best friend just had 8 decent size HVBW dropped at a new property he bought. Said come take what I want, but leave some for an impoverished veteran. I said how much does he want and where does he live? I'll cut and deliver for him! Then he asked do you want other firewood? (What kind of question is that?) He told me a mutual friend of ours has a bunch of trees down and can't find anyone to take them. I texted our friend, he said he had 20 trees dropped in spring and then a storm took some others out. Some is already cut up, most still in log length. Black cherry, BL, and maple. He asked how much do you want? I said all of it. His response, "Really?!" Going to look at them this week to get a plan. So I didn't accomplish what I wanted this weekend, but Im ahead of the game.
Seems like how it usually works, either you are looking for some to cut or you have it coming at you from all sides. Feast of famine.
Same here, but I justify it by reasoning that sweeping it in May does me no good in case birds take up residence in it during August.
Even though you didn't accomplish your goal, I'd say you made out very well. Talking firewood seems to lead to more firewood at times. Looking forward to seeing pics of the bounty.
I would say maybe 15 minutes away for the HVBW and the other score is 12 minutes, lol. Its really only maybe 6 -10 miles but the back roads slow me down. I know the properties and the good thing is, pull trailer right up to the score. All flat.
When I took the one pooch out this morning I thought how nice of a day it was going to be. So I used a vacation day for a firewood mental health day. I spent most of it moving Oct - Dec wood to the porch. It's all Kentucky coffee tree that uprooted and landed on the house in 2019. Im not so keen on it. This stuff takes forever to dry! Stacked top covered for over 4 years. Testing the MC of some resplits, I was still getting readings of 20%. Most were barely sub 18%. For being stacked that long, I think it kind of sucks.
I had some KCT mixed in with a cord of HL S/S from Summer 2020 that I sold late last Winter. I gave a few pieces to Eric Wanderweg to try. Wonder if he checked the MC or had issues with it burning. It was a yard planting and the only time I've encounter it around here. Stack looks great! How long will that last come full time burning season?
Looks great Bob. Does KC offer any distinct aroma? The weather is absolutely superb! I need to get a saw in the woods here soon. This might be the push I need.
Im thinking it should last until the beginning of December. Depending on temps of course. Not much aroma to it, IMO. You better get out there, beautiful weather the next several days. No need to watch Michigan football this year .
