how does the weight limit work in the US for towing? I know you're allowed 26K lbs with a straight truck and a regular driver's license, but is there a set limit for trailer weight, or does it not matter as long as the truck and trailer are less than 26K combined?

I don't like pushing any machine's limits on the road, but that reminds me of arguments I've heard about the way our drivers licensing system is set up with regards to weight and vehicle size (and in some ways, it doesn’t make sense in either regard).
To a certain point, I think a bigger vehicle requires more driving skill than a heavier one, especially with a trailer involved. I mean, a 5,000 lb F-150 towing a 1,000 lb boat doesn't really require more skill for the weight difference vs a 2,000 lb hatchback, the brakes and suspension are built to handle the heavier vehicle and therefore function very similarly. But the truck and trailer sure take a lot more experience and caution to maneuver correctly, especially in reverse.

Yes, there's a big difference between that and a 100,000 lb semi, or even an F-350 with a 15,000 lb trailer, but it's laughable (or concerning, depending who's driving) that I need a semi license to drive a day cab tractor with an empty 26' pup trailer, but I can tow a 38' camper with an F-650 and all I need is a normal non-commercial driver's license, which I can take my test for in a smart car.

I believe there are numerous countries which require an upgraded/commercial license for anything heavier than a 3/4 ton truck with a full load in the bed.

 

Some states do have a NON-commercial class A license for those instances.

Then look at the Ford vs the ram or GM 1/2 tons and you'll start to wonder even more at the rams and GMs. The chassis and running great are just way heavier duty on the Ford.

most F150 are 1200-1900 lbs if they are lucky vs my 2550 lb.

 

It makes sense when you think about it. I mean, if you've never driven anything bigger than a civic, you can cause an accident just as easily because you don't have training or experience driving a big/heavy truck and trailer. Doesn't matter if it's used recreationally or commercially.

Here, you're allowed 9920 lbs for a trailer with a regular license, but you can take a road test to tow heavier, and your weight limit will be adjusted to however much your trailer weighs that you took the test with. That's pretty reasonable.

There is no clear weight limit on the truck here, rather the defining characteristic is simply any truck with a single rear axle. For most people, that'll probably effectively mean a similar limit to your 26,000 lbs, but if you have an air brake certificate, trucks somewhat heavier become more plentiful.

don't you have the HD package F-150? In other words, what many people would call a 5/8 ton?

 

It's not that rare to have higher payload f150s. I'm aware his is a 3/4 ton.

 

Went out to garage.. touched up blades on mower; noticed a small spot of oil on concrete.. checked oil on zero turn A lil low so I ask wife to grab me quart from shelf.. she brings the hydraulic oil

And a 5w -30 for zero turn on OPE shelf

TO be fair to my beautiful wife.. her dad died when she was 3 years old and her Mom has 7 brothers so neither of them know…

Admittedly, it's not a hard mistake to make if you don't pay close attention sometimes. Say you have 2 vehicles, one gas and one diesel, or especially if you only drive a diesel for years and trade it for a gas truck. Habits die hard.

Same as having two vehicles, one auto and one manual. It'll be a miracle if you don't go for a clutch pedal that's not there sooner or later, but that scenario lacks the same potential for disaster.

 

"They" should make the filling nozzles a different diameter than a gasoline nozzle......or print on the fuel cap "diesel"........or maybe even make the diesel fuel caps a different color to help remind people not to make that mistake.
