On my way to bushhog at my Pops last Saturday and saw an oak down next to road. Stopped by house on way home and secured permission to process. Started Monday pm after my real job and finished up Tuesday pm. Hi heat with index 106-108’….
Some good stuff there. Don't know the answer until you ask. Dont know how you folks down South deal with the humidity all the time. Been a sticky Summer so far here in Southern Connecticut and I'm tired of it.
That's nice, looks like water oak. Yes, it's been hot this summer. What part of the state are you in? We have been having a very humid month, rain nearly every evening. We have done a little cutting too. Making a 50' wide powerline right of way to our son's property...probably taking the big one by the tractor down as well. A few of the oaks ... One pile we have to process...fresh cut on right side came from this job....
East Central around Meridian. Yes, the heat is stifling. I would like to move a bit further north and enjoy an actual fall and more spring! Here it’s Pre Summer, Almost Summer, Hades, and Summers Amost Over as seasons-Ha! Honestly would like just a bit more winter. If I work outside- esp non automated wood work- I take a lot of breaks, pre drink electrolytes and water and make sure I keep sweating…
TJV, that looks like some great firewood to come. I need a grapple on my Kubota! Then I could “process” the wood I get similar. Now it’s cut and buck in the field, at best split to make man portable and haul home and unload. Not counting this new stuff my estimate is I’ve scrounged and processed a little over a chord so this haul may get me to two. Small potatoes by most standards I know but a good feeling for me.
Sounds like our seasons...lol...we're about the same latitude, go due east from you, about 50 miles east of Macon GA is where we are. I grew up cutting wood, hand split until the late 90's, got the tractor in '07, grapple just a couple yrs ago.
I've worked outside in the Summer on the Gulf Coast. The guys I worked with paced themselves and took lots of little breaks, mostly for water. For me, by noon the water wasn't helping and I had to drive up the street for some small bottles of gatorade. Some of the guys had a red powder they added to the company supplied water. Koolaid, salt and I few ohter things depending on who you talked to. Cheaper than buying gatorade.
Just water here in the South is an invitation to cramp later and you tire quicker. I have found pre hydration with the Gatorade type drinks is best. Also listen to your body: if you need a short rest, REST. Doesn’t matter what little you accomplished since last rest. This kind of heat is more than uncomfortable: it can be dangerous. Also, start spelling yourself early before exhaustion. Keep some in the tank. If you’ve never experienced 90+% humidity then just know: sweat does not evaporate. That’s how your body cools naturally but in that humidity it does not . Every drop you lose drips off or will be in your clothes/ there is no evaporative cooling so you really heat up fast .
Southern lingo, derived from sit for a spell. I can attest to that Mississippi heat and humidity. Absolutely no way you’d get me into that anymore
Yep, clothes are soaked and you don't cool off. Also if you're diabetic, your body doesn't regulate temp as well, either. At least that's what my Dr told me. Did some yard work Wednesday... My shorts after 1 hr of string trimming... Shirt was even wetter, and it's an air dry type
My twice a week cutoff score. Bagged a little cherry along with the usual hickory and white oak. Up to 18 pallets of cutoffs.
