I started flying drones as a hobby after I retired. Actually quite handy as I can launch from the yard and be flying up on the ridge for a quick look around in short order. I don’t think there will be a shortage of firewood in this area any time soon. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

I'm planning on getting into is as rc cars are loosing their appeal a tad. Is the registration ect, with the FAA, a big deal?
Supposedly everyone needs to register wether flying for fun or commercially. More hoops for flying them commercially though.
Definitely. I only plan on flying on my property. I guess they come with trackers that the faa can use to see where they are and if you registered, know who owns it.

Part 107 license. my dad is former FAA too. hell, I even stopped flying and building model rockets because I got talked to after my rocket made a ping on the local ATC radar….
There are several folks around here flying them comment to apply fungicide, cover crops & some herbicides, one guy was really squawking about the faa registration. My buddy is using one to apply fungicide to his corn/beans, I saw it the first time the other day while raking hay. It was bizarre & the first thing that came to mind was the “Terminator” movie with the drones overhead… His has 8 props, 2 per arm & a ten gallon tank.
I've played with model rockets a little. 600 ft is about the highest mine went based on the manufacturers specs.

On a side note, I helped Chase set his off to start doing some fungicide this evening after I finished baling. He called about 15 later & said we set it off on or near a bumble bee nest. He got blasted a couple times & said they were really pizzed off. I am glad I wasn’t standing there watching. Lol.
I had made a Estes SR-71 rocket. It would hit 6-700 feet easy. I had a momentary lapse of reason and decided to use that kit as a model and upscaled it 3X. I mean it started out as a 28” tall model to begin with…. And a 16” wingspan. what could go wrong right? that was when I learned about weight and size limits as well as propellant allowances…. I used G size motors. Biggest production motor I could find. I never fired it a second time to get an actual height. but it was awesome.
There is a model rocket club about a mile from us. My buddy was a member there. They need FAA permission before launching some of their rockets. They get time slots when they are allowed based on aircraft in the area.
We have some cool drones at work, I don't fly them, but we use them to scan existing buildings (inside and out). As well as to take videos and stills to document project progress for some of our clients. Our pilots are licensed.
