Pull the muffler and see what the piston looks like. Love mine and it's a steal for 300 if in good shape.
I’d say depends on condition. Have any pics to share? As Ron said, view of that piston through the exhaust port is a gold standard (for me) to help judge worth.
Slant fin= (usually) Early model 1128 with a 10mm wrist pin crank. Good numbers for a stock cylinder, per reports. They were strong runners. I’ve been into two of them and maybe feel a slight difference between 440s. I don’t time saws or do porting, though. I just cut wood.
Most 044 had a slant fin cylinder from what I can see. Out of (10) carcasses that I picked up, 5 were 10MM wrist pin, 5 were 12MM wrist pin, only 1 of which had the straight fin cylinder on it. The other (9) 10MM and 12MM had the same Mahle cylinder. The very early model 10MM had a Kolbenschmidt cylinder on it that is said to have had better and more aggressive timing numbers. But the 10MM and 12MM Mahle slant fin cylinders are identical inside
You can tell if it has a 10 or 12mm wrist pin by looking at the saw. All 10mm had slant fin cylinders. Some/most 12mm had them. You’d have to remove the top cover to know on a 12MM which cylinder it had
Was the 044 badge any indication of age. I also notice a difference in air filter cover between mine and the one Jeff’s picture. Mine has a metal badge and the one in the pic is plastic like the 440’s. I also believe mine has the ks cylinder which makes it ultra valuable.
I don’t remember the exact number, but before serial number starting in 12938 is 10MM. There’s also a 90° notch between the oil cap and the muffler on the magnesium casting that designates 10 MM, as opposed to the side of the case being angled which indicates 12 MM
It'd be interesting to see side by side pics as IDers. Also how much more is a slant fin worth vs a "normal" 044? Im not wanting any version of an 044/440/441 for my arsenal but if I can find a deal on a slant fin, why not?
Outside of the saw nerd community? Maybe just a little more. Many loggers and arborists around here have completely moved on from that era of saw.
Metal badges are earlier. The early ones had the “fastback“ style flat air filter like other saws of that time. Later ones came with the HD set up that use the cartridge filter similar to your 400
Personally the 10MM isn’t worth any more than a 12 to me because what the 12 gives up in power it makes up for in strength over the wrist pin and bearing. Nice ones bring more, beat up ones bring less
