Hey yall I decided to go back to my neighbors and get the rest of the elm I left from my post the other day. Anyway after I grabbed the rest of the elm (pictures soon) I saw this blow down and was wondering what wood it is and if it’s any good any help is appreciated thank yall Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Im seeing black birch. If fresh, snap a twig and sniff it. Has a wintergreen scent. Great firewood too. End grain pics of the bucked rounds would confirm. Either way still a great find.
Not fresh so not able to smell it but the camera doesn’t do these rounds justice the color is like a peach colorish Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Well I got it all bucked and got a full load of the cherry or black birch or whatever it is Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Huh, I was wrong! Must be cherry then as birch rots fast and is usually punky throughout. Has a short shelf life once down/dead. The cherry should still have a faint aroma. Cherry heartwood is very rot resistant.
I saw that at first glance too and had to really think about it. By bark ID alone, black birch won't get that curled plated appearance until it's a much larger DBH. Cherry on the other hand gets rough at a much younger age.
The best thing you can do to start learning about the woods you are cutting is to try to look it up and come up with an I d then post and see how close you are and if you are wrong ask how the guys came to the conclusion of what you have
Well I officially got all this cherry split will have pictures of it stacked shortly. I wish I could get more of this cherry it split like a dream. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
