Friday night I went into my hunting land, and to get into it we have to cross an easement from the road to get to the 80 acres. I had to change SD cards and batteries on my trail cams, and check out the new culvert and my grass planting. Well a storm that rolled through all of Wisconsin on Thursday and a big white pine tree snapped off about 20 feet up and the top blocked vehicular access. So Saturday morning I brought a chainsaw, the ms170 that I won at Denny's GTG a couple years ago. There's always some branches or something blocking trails, so I always bring a saw. Here's what was left after 1 full tank run through the 170 That was a lot of tree for that little saw. Good thing it was a softwood. A refill of gas and bar oil, and I was all set. I brought just enough bar oil. I had to cut from both ends of the log for most of it. Keep in mind this isn't my tree, so I only cut what was blocking the trail. I didn't care about the length of rounds, as long as I could move them.
I’ve caught 2 ticks crawling on me so far this year. We have our fair share here in PA. Luckily none have attached to us or the dog yet.
That saw did a fine job of that big ole pine! I pulled 4 or 5 ticks off me so far this year, they are awful. Most all of them except one was those darn tiny tiny ones. I mentioned in of my PM's most all the ticks I find on me are dead. I've found them that way for a few years now, always thought when I removed them I was killing them or leaving the head in. But I double and triple check, no head left so I started down the rabbit hole and found this. Not sure how accurate or true it is but apparently some people have built an immunity to them. When a tick starts sucking blood, white blood cells rush to the scene and release an inflammatory chemical called histamine which in turn kills the tick rather quickly. Ticks die when they bite him. This man's immunity to ticks could pave the way for a tick vaccine. I’m a tick biologist whose body seems to kill off ticks
Way to get it done Hork! I liked my 170 and bucked up an entire red maple with it back in 2020. It is a nice little saw. I had hot start issues with mine, why I sent it packing.
I use my 170 all the time , especially around the mill for a quick cut and slicing up slab wood. Not a powerhouse by any means but handy.
It's not my land, and they are a-holes. It was on the land I have to cross, and have legal rights to do so, to get to my land. Clearing the easement "road" is my responsibility.
Very interesting. I know my mom isn't immune to ticks, because she had a big old bullseye from one ac few years ago. She still says she had no ticks even crawling on her. Granted she didn't go anywhere as far as I did into the land, but still...
Not sure how true it is or if I am truly immune I just know they are always dead when I remove them. Lord knows I've been bitten plenty of times since buying this home 8 yrs ago. Ticks are out of control on this property! My father in law had gotten bitten years ago lymes disease, it really messed him up for awhile and flared back up from time to time.
My dog carries them into the house. Wife and I have both removed two of them from us. Seldom ever find one on the dog. A few years back, I got Lymes disease. I got a bull's eye cellulitis the size of a football. Sick I was! Someone in Maine just died from Powassan virus, another virus found in deer ticks.
My sister recently passed away and one of the contributing factors was a case of undiagnosed Lymes Disease...I believe the term they used was "Lyme Brain". Horrible disease, keep diligent and look for those little creeps anytime you are out in the woods!
Sorry for the loss of your sister. Yes, Lymes Disease is a beast. Most cases are resolved but not so for everyone. I think my arthritis is much worse since I had the disease. I can't walk unassisted so I don't go in the woods, but I still have to be careful about watching to see if the dog brings any bugs into the house.
