We had large owls picking off pets in our old neighborhood. We lost our 2 y/o applehead siamese The ol' brittany hunting champ found his remains for us (1996). I have no solution the quandry except we kept our future puppies inside and supervised them while out till they were too big for the owls. I remember taking out our large blonde dog in the middle of the night when she was 8 weeks, except I really needed to pee. While in the bathroom I heard owls above me. Ran out there and it was a family of Great Horned Owls in full white plumage, a pair and an adolescent. Puppy was safe but I learned my lesson.

I don't appreciate parents speeding through school zones to get kids to school. So wrong.

Giz weighs in at a mighty 20 lbs... do you think an owl would go for her?

Don't get me started on bicycles. I grew up in bicycle mecca, 1/2 the town closed for several days each summer for the coors classic. Over the last 20 years my next town then was attracting more national races and too many unsafe cyclers be it professional or recreational. I happen to live at ground zero there, glad to be away from it, as it was more important for me to drive safely rather than constantly defensively brake the emboldened cyclers. Why do they think its ok to go 50mph down a steep grade when there are other vehicles and the speed limit is 35? On the same note I have also seen terrible motorcycle accidents, all 3 appeared to be college age driving unsafely on crotch rockets, except one on a harley that was a DUI.

One time dear husband locked up the big pickup while hauling the 7 horse trailer (coming home empty from taking garbage from the dump). He jumped out of the truck and I thought he was going to clock the bicyclist. He had passed us way over the speed limit and then hit his brakes to turn. Ummmm, you can't expect a large pickup towing a heavy trailer to stop on a dime like a 10 speed. No hitting but a stern warning from DH that the kid almost got himself killed....

I cna't say but dear husband thinks 20 lbs is safe. "even a bald eagle could have trouble flying with 20 lbs" I wouldn't worry, our blessed kitty was under 10 lbs.

My oldest Corgi is not much more than 30 lbs, and face to face I truly believe he would take on a bear, "well maybe"…. but getting hit from above, that may be a whole nother ball game! I've seen some owl's haul off some big stuff!

I'm surprised a JR. has the stamina to go six miles. My daughter had one. He is constant motion and cries if he wants something.

Well I guess I was wrong and am going to eat some crow...... I pulled the trail map out and we only hiked 4.2 miles  I thought the one trail we were on was 3 miles but we cut the last one short by taking a crossover trail in the middle of the loop. Either way he is still raring to go! After we got home he still wants to play fetch. I'm pretty sure the two JR's we have had would kill themselves before they stopped. As far as the whining goes he doesn't get away with that and neither did our other dog I think some of that is in the early on training.

I missed a few pages - glad everything is OK with Emma Loon

We lost two dogs to what I assume was Coyotes, worry about Samson and Minnie going out in the dark and apparently they are worried as well because they wait for Billy Bob before going off the porch.
I don't think you're ever going to extirpate Coyotes, they are too adaptable.

Anways my funny dog story for today:
Finally caught at least one of the wood rats in my old truck - only way to get the big ones is a live trap;) Let the games begin:D
Billy Bob and Minnie were rolling the trap around on the grass - I wish I had the camera.
They eventually knocked the door open, the rat made it 3' probably less, Minnie had the head, BB the tail. It ended quite quickly in stalemate tug of war.
