Went to a local store that deals Stihl. Asked them to order a MS400CM with 20" light bar. He says they don't have the option. He grabs a 20" light bar and corresponding chain and rings it up:

This would be for the saw w/ bar and chain, plus 20" light.

    Two questions:

    1. I don't need two 20" bars with different chains, should I get a 24 or 25" light bar and pay the difference?

    2. This is the big one. The saw he had was new, but date of manufacture was 10/2021. Is this an issue? Have they changed anything with Mtronic since then? I thought I read somewhere there was a generation change, but maybe not with the 400.

    Thanks guys.

If you have other Stihl dealers I would check out alternative prices. That price is high for a 400.

How much lower than MSRP should it be? MSRP is $1,119.99. Basically $1,120

MSRP’s are not the same at different dealers. I recently saw it for $975 and thought that was high. I think that was at my local Kubota dealer and their Stihl prices are ridiculous. They still have a 441 on the shelf. There’s at least 5 Stihl dealers within 20 minutes of me so I would call around.

    Okay, thanks.

What about the date of manufacture? Any ideas on if they may have changed firmware or anything on Mtronics?

Not that I’m aware of. A google search may let you know if they updated coil/control module since 21.

My research shows them $1000-1100 around here so the price is on par IMO. Maybe they are cheaper in Chud's area.

My opinion...buy the saw with the stock 20" and get a lightweight 25". Whatever you get you wont be disappointed. I love my 400.

As far as I know Stihl hasn't changed anything regarding the mtronics so disregard the mfr date.

10-4. Thank both of y'all for your invaluable opinions.

$50-100 ain't gonna kill me, but I don't want to be taken advantage of. I did price this awhile back at a dealer and they quoted MSRP I wouldn't have known better one way or the other.

    Glad to help.

I have five Stihl dealers within 20 minutes of me so i'd price around. If you find a dealer you like and they have a good service dept, don't be afraid to spend a few extra bucks.

Be sure to post pics when you get it.

Don't let the dealer tell you they are required to charge you the price mandated by Stihl. It's BS. My guy regularly will give me a discount over MSRP. Usually at least $100 or more.

FWIW, I just read on another site this morning that Stihl has a new 400.1 version that is replacing the 400. Supposedly it’s available first in Germany (guess that would also mean Europe). No one seems to be sure exactly what all of the changes will be. I have a 400 and it’s a great saw, bought with a 25” light bar as have other saw with 20”. They didn’t force me to buy a additional bar.

Went to another store today. They didn't have one, but a sister store did.

To order one would be full MSRP of $1119.99 ( they said they couldn't go lower).

But to buy the saw that the sister store had in stock would be $969.99! It has a 25" bar. I know it says backorder, but it's coming from the other store.

    20240601_181201.jpg

I don't know why the total is what it is. At $969.99, it should have been $1050.01 at 8.25% state tax.

I think this will work well. I will buy a 20" bar that fits. At work, they basically buy new Stihl chains, and when they're dull, they throw them in the pile. Maybe I can convince the boss to throw a couple or three out.

New saws are always fun. Did you get an ETA for arrival?

He did not give me a hard number. He said the truck from them comes every two or three days.

If I don't hear from them by Wednesday, I'll give them a shout.
