Yes, it split real good. I cut down a dead walnut next to it. And it got wedged on this ash tree. Then the ash uprooted during a wind storm! Now I have some more wood for next year. Have a great day guys!
It's definitely black cherry - Prunus serotina http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prunus_serotina It's the type of cherry they make the lumber from. Midrange btus - better than soft maple, less than ash. Can dry it in a year so you'll be good to go.
I should have quoted curry, I meant yep black cherry and cherry splits easy for me. None of my ash trees have come down on their own so I couldn't tell ya how they split...
Cherry also smells awesome, I have been cutting a decent amount the past week. Stacks are smelling great!
