    Can you all identify this tree for me? I plan on burning it in my furnace next year! (Grizzly Adams, nice movie!)

    Yes, it split real good. I cut down a dead walnut next to it. And it got wedged on this ash tree. Then the ash uprooted during a wind storm! Now I have some more wood for next year. Have a great day guys!

    It's definitely black cherry - Prunus serotina http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prunus_serotina

    It's the type of cherry they make the lumber from. Midrange btus - better than soft maple, less than ash. Can dry it in a year so you'll be good to go.

    Its definitely not Ash. Leaves dont look compound and the bark is all wrong for Ash.

    X 3 cherry. The "burnt potato chip" bark is another hint to cherry. Good smelling stuff!

    I should have quoted curry, I meant yep black cherry and cherry splits easy for me. None of my ash trees have come down on their own so I couldn't tell ya how they split...

    How do you get your split wood to be cheery? Mine is neutral at best!
