Granted, I have machines, but my chain is being done strictly by hand. My first time too, I am learning lots, it's fun.
Hand , machine, its all good!! Actually, gettin it done by hand is awesome !! Here is my RS that is a seriously angry work chain, probably not a speedy competition chain, but I aint ever ran a faster work RS
Well I finally started a 84DL ..........whatcha guys think so far? Took me a hour to figure out how to take a close up
Love your bar sharping set up I have found I can really tighten the chain up and still move it around the bar by turning the clutch drum.
Sure can ........... mine spins on 4130 tube (thats been treated to a nice coat of moly) without using the bearing, if I pry through the bar mount, I can get it so the chain wont move, although its not necessary for it to be that tight. Nice thing about both (yours and mine) is that with a simple rim swap it will go on .325, .375, .404 setups .......... and we dont need no chainsaw hanging from the vise !!!! Do the bolt threads on yours eat into the drum bearing surface, or did you use the needle bearing ?
One day, when all goes well and I have a cutter looking like that - I will finally say that I have square filing down ................ untill then, I will just look at the pics in this thread and dream ! I am getting better, but I just dont have time lately. 4 kids, 30hrs of OT a week, teaching 3 nights/week on top of that ............... I might just have to send in the new RS and the new RSL (for baselines) by themselves. This chain competition has heated up beyone what I expected ............. rocking, clipping, dog-boning, tunneling, loosing 1/2 of the rivet heads, I am just waiting for someone to post up drilled drivers next
This is just the minor leagues for chain work. The real deal is splitting the cutters from the chain and thinning and filing them and reassemble it after all of that.
Does the 2 angles help? I see the top square file? But then the lower round file to take out the beak? Looks like a top cutter and a bottom cutter..
