The guy from town came out for another $80 load. Wants his third load Tuesday so I went to the woods and loaded up some oak. Threw 3 cherries on top. Then jumped on the zero turn and mowed a small part of the lawn. What the heck is this? Not ten yards from the house. Good thing I had deck set high or it would have went airborne.
Has anybody used Hackberry for kindling? After church I got bored so I decided to start an experiment. My woods has many hackberry trees. The birds are doing a good job spreading it. I dropped a small hack and cut it up 12 inches. I am going to split it down to kindling size and see if it’s any good. If it don’t work out I will burn it in a campfire.
Went to the woods today to scout turkeys. I have a tag starting May 8th. Found a few turkeys but more other stuff. The monster blondes are up. Filled my ball cap and pockets under two dying elms. Next time I better have my mesh bag along.
You ever have one of those days? When you’re the bug not the windshield? Another guy from town calls me couple days ago for a trailer load of camp fire wood. In other words a little punk is ok as long as it’s hardwood. I cut him a load yesterday and tried to pick it up tonight. Had the trailer full of oak, elm, and a little cherry and run a trailer tire off the bead. I may have hit a tree root a little to fast. Unloaded the trailer, unhooked, drove home for a jack and a 4 way. Got the tire home, relubed the bead aired up and it held. Got his load in the shed. Will see if it holds air in the morning. Just another day in da woods.
Yep, I’m back in business. Went to the hardware store bought a $7 tube. Tire still has tread but 3 very tiny pinhole leaks.
Put up a small hunting blind in my woods today. My turkey season starts Wednesday. Right underneath my son’s deer tower. And then I realized I got a big pile of split red oak that needs hauling to my monster pile. Can you see the camo turkey hut? I still have a large pile of split black cherry to move also. Then on the way out I bumped a hen turkey off her nest. She’s sitting on 9 eggs. She’ll be back to sitting in no time. Keep up the good work mom.
We had a rainy stormy morning here so I commenced my Hackberry kindling experiment. My DR splitter has a 21 inch stroke and all the Hackberry was cut 12 inches so I just put a block of wood on the return so it didn’t go back as far. Green hackberry splits like green elm. Very stringy but I got thru it. Glad the splitter has a high speed option it saved more time. 39% on my meter glad I don’t need any kindling for a couple years. Got a nice jag in the shed I will put it on a pallet outside when my turkey hunting is done.
Back to hauling some firewood tomorrow. I turkey hunted for about 25 minutes this morning. And a guy from town came out tonite for some camp fire wood. Gave me $50!
Today was a burn day. My pile in the township cemetery is no more. Then I pulled my trailer full of hackberry kindling out into some sun. It needs sun and wind.
Finally got done hauling all the firewood I had cut and split to my woods pile. Ended up with a nice jag. I would say it is about 85% oak. Most of it red oak so it splits nice by hand. Anybody care to guess how many cords? I am going to tape measure it after supper.
While walking thru my woods today, I interrupted somebody’s lunch Mama was not very happy with me she was a snorting and stomping 25 feet away
