I posted a week and a half ago about the pull cord recoil on my Stihl 038 magnum not retracting. Turns out, the spring was broke and it was a quick $20 fix. I ran it for about a half a tank worth of gas and then all of a sudden it made a loud pop sound and then it shut off. I couldn't get it restarted hot or cold and smell gas. Not sure what happened with it and tearing it apart to find/fix the problem is not a strength of mine. I will take it to my local shop and see if it's worth putting any more money into or not. This takes me to my next dilemna. What Husky brand saw do I replace it with if it isn't worth repairing? I sell wood so I cut a lot of logs that get dropped off. I currently have a husky 390 which I use on the larger logs so I'm looking at something comparable to the 038 magnum which is 72cc. I would like to stay with the husky because that's what my shop sells and they know me by name and have always taken care of me.

It would be great to find a 372 XP to go with the 390 but finding one will probably be tough. I hear good things about the newest 70cc Husqvarnas, the 572. They are autotune saws and run hard.

Sorry, not at all helpful but I'm curious to hear other's opinions on Husky saws in that CC class.

I should add that I mostly run a 24” bar on the 390 but have a 36” for it when needed. The 038 has an 18” bar and I have really grown to like that length so that’s what I’d most likely put on whatever new saw I get. Time is money and I want fast.

372 gets my vote. Either xtorque or OE. She'll pull an 18" chain real nice!

Wish I could let you take my ported 365 special for a test ride!
I’m not a fan of the x-torq 372. I’d vote for an OE though. But.. seriously I’d consider the 5 series 562/555 or a 572. Go to your dealer and ask them to make a few cuts. If you haven’t had your mitts on a 5, you’ll love it. They cut so smooth and vibs are very low. Much better than the 3’s, and love my 3’s (mainly because I like the ability to fix anything myself).
If you’d consider porting, get the lighter lower cc saw and have it hot-rodded. It makes running saws much more fun. Time is money… I cut a log before, timed it, sent saw for porting, cut the same log and saw cut 40% faster.

If you are sticking with 18-20" bar length the 562 is a great saw and will pull those just fine. That being said if you want fast put that same bar on a 372 0r newer 572 and you will not be disappointed. The 372 is a PITA to start. I do like the 5 series saws. Keep us posted

70 ish CC's on a 18" bar I'd think upping the sprocket a tooth would be beneficial.

The 562XP with a 28 inch bar handled these logs no problem! Good luck in your search!

It’ll make the chain spin faster.

What's the trade-off? Loss of torque down low?

Try a 20" bar on a 70cc saw. I'm saying a Stihl 500i for the win. I still think a ported saw would do wonders for your production. Have you ever tried one Joe?
