I knew this cherry was about done....just hadn't found the time to cut it down. The tree had different plans and fell last night. Landed right on my fire ring and miraculously the ring wasn't even bent. Amazing really.
Yep...and right by the wood pile. Already have most of it cut up. Need more bar oil so finish it tomorrow.
My son wants a couple of thin rounds to make some stuff out of. I e never been able to cut those where they don't end up splitting. Any trick to keep that from happening?
Change of plans in managing your time......."cut cherry tree that I have been putting off immediately!" No damage = nice.
Yep...we got lucky. I was worried about it reaching the camper which was one of the reasons I'd been putting it off. After memorial day I was moving the camper so that was my timeframe on cutting it. Looks like I would've been fine haha. There's also our well head under there I was worried about but it missed that too.
What's killing me is what to do with the wood. I don't really need it and we're moving 2 hours away in 2 months. I already have a whole ash tree stacked up at someone's house I will have to move out there. I have a bunch of oak here I'll have to move. Just seems like adding unnecessary work. My neighbors son is always looking for wood to heat his house with and they're like family so I will probably have him come get it. After decades of hoarding wood when I can get it and the fact this is cherry is making that a hard phone call to make haha
Gotta love a volunteer! As far as how to keep/move it...its not a huge tree, what about cutting logs to 2x/3x/4x/etc (whatever you can handle) your normal firewood length, so it can be moved more easily/quickly when the time comes? CSS once at the new place...
Made the call today. Gave some to my neighbor here and another friend is coming to get the bigger stuff to heat with next year. I'd rather help someone than move wood I don't really need. Now....odds any of them appreciate it? I find these days appreciation is not that common. Case in point....I'd bucked it all but there were a few small limbs I missed. The neighbor today would just break them off and throw them in the yard even though he was walking right past my fire ring to his trailer. Not a huge deal but something I would never do. If I'm getting something like that I leave things better than I found them.
