A coworker bought a fixer property and one of his many projects was having a tree service cut down some big cedars and firs in the back yard. It feels weird driving into the city to get firewood. I got 3 loads today and my dad got 2. When I went back for my 3rd load, I also cut about 2 truck loads worth of rounds for us to pick up tomorrow. My 290 isn't the ideal saw for this wood this size, but it got the job done. And with so much wood available I can leave the really big stuff. We're not taking any cedar.
I've cut lots with a 290 but mostly used a 16" bar which could handle almost everything we have here.
Nice find! Is the Doug Fir better than the Cedar for burning? buZZsaw BRAD hooked me up with some cedar kindling, it’s awesome for getting the stove going.
Most framing lumber is Douglas fir and works great when split into kindling. Personally I like the cedar better. Everyone that gets the cedar loves it.
If it were me, I would snag a row of cedar rounds on one of the trips. It really does make quick lighting kindling. Don’t waste your time with a lot of it, but you will be surprised by how great it is for getting a fire started. Nice loads of wood!
Western red cedar isn't very good as firewood. It burns up fast. I had a cedar cut down in my yard a few years ago and that's the only time I've bothered with it as cord wood.
Nice Doug fir score!! Perfect size and very easy place to cut. Can't beat a easy picking score especially when it's a desirable species.
