I bought my 390xp just over 2 years ago. I was hoping the bar would last a little longer but it’s time for another.

Like most things; they simply wear out.

That was yesterday morning when the sprocket finally went but I pushed it through a few more large logs.

Looks like the tip is replaceable? Don't know what the rails look like but maybe a good dressing would clean them up? Looks like you already bought a new bar tho. :salute:

TOAST! I'd say you got your moneys worth out of it.

What other saws you running Joe? IIRC you had an 038 Stihl?

Yeah I dress the bar up from time to time but this one needs replacing. Has probably cut 250-350 cords.

Grease yes, too tight only on occasion but I will quickly loosen.

Nah the old bar is showing signs of significant wear as well. It’s more narrow than the new one by a decent amount.

Yes an 038 for wood that’s typically 16” in diameter and smaller.

At first I was wondering how a bar could become completely spanked in only 2 years, but yeah at that kind of volume I can definitely see it happening easily :bug: With my 4-7 cord per year routine I still have to dress rails occasionally and oil the sprockets regularly, but a bar will last me a LONG time. It's kind of hard for me to wrap my head around what it actually takes to do your kind of volume, in regards to fuel, oil, chains, and especially maintenance.

The chains is the toughest part honestly. I like to have at least half a dozen for each saw. Get down to 1-2 sharp ones for each and then worry about getting them ready to cut again. As far as maintenance, I mostly worry about keeping the air filter clean. Run it and put it away. The saws generally don't sit too long.

    I understand
the air filter has a lot to do with performance and keeping dirt out of the carburetor is a big thing

I don't think there's such a thing as having too many spare chains either. They're a consumable item like 2 cycle or bar oil, just on a longer time scale. Eventually they're going to get used. 6 per saw sounds pretty good to me
