This wood had been on the ground for awhile. I had some time today so I got some. It is not black cherry, is it some other type of cherry?

Definitely looks like some sort of cherry. I assume the split smells sweet?

Yes, but when it's been on the ground for a while like that it gets a mildly sweet fermented kind of smell.

I’ve had a few cord of black birch before, but fresh cut. I guess this could be. I don’t remember the pinkish color in the splits.

I processed some this morning that was white all the way through, but I've had plenty that was dark in the center, like this:

Looks like black birch. Larger trees will have "cracked" bark like that.

Looks more like grey or black birch to me, too.

tempImage7q7OYi.png Black birch for sure. I have a lot on my property and it's great stuff. Dries quickly and excellent BTUs. The horizontal lines (lenticels) are a dead give away. Cherry has a more burnt potato chip look about it. Here is a pic with them side by side. The black birch in the pic is younger so the it hasn't started to break up like the one in your pic. But I think you'll see what I mean.

Im thinking black birch as well. Cherrys smell is pretty distinct and the grain in the first split doesnt look like cherry. A cherry that size the bark would look all flaked out to.

Black Birch with a little illness. Very common. I call it canker sores :) pic #3 shows it as that black spot. Still all good wood tho.

I have seen and cut many cherry trees that the same tree will have several different bark textures with different colors. It looks like cherry to me. Though I never have cut black birch.

Here is another picture of black birch in various stages of maturity. You can see is starts smooth and then begins to break up as it gets some years on it. IMG_3809.jpg

Horizontal lenticels are visible on cherry also. Maybe not black cherry but there are more species of em than that. Fire cherry is one that comes to mind.

True. The one we've always called wild cherry has them. Looks like black birch bark on steroids. Also oozes a translucent jelly like goo from wounds.

I wonder if cherry trees cross pollinate as easily as oaks?
