I have a MS 400 C-M with a 20-inch bar and chain, 72 links, 3/8, .050". My wife bought it for me last February (2023). I ran a tank or so of fuel through it then got sick and haven't been able to run it since. My son and his buddy ran it a few times, I wanted it to be run, so they used it. When we bought the saw, we also bought a new/extra chain for it, I can't find the box though. I think it was 33RS. Does that sound right? I should be able to use it in a few weeks hopefully, still gotta heal up a little more first. I want to grab a few more chains for it. Thanks, NYH1.
Stopped by Runnings this afternoon to look a pistols. On my way out I grabbed one of these 2 in 1 files. Never used one before so I figured I'd give it a try.
All I use for the last 3 years or more. I removed the raker files in all of mine because I tend to get heavy handed and make the chains a bit aggressive.
Yes RS is full chisel faster cutting chain. Love running my 400 and has become my go to saw. Feel better soon and post pics when you are able to cut again.
Should as long as they’re both 3/8th. Searched the difference between the two and I doubt a firewooder could actually tell the difference back to back. Maybe if you’re cutting big softwoods? If you get loops of each, report back and let us know.
Visually? They are pretty easy to distinguish IF you have seen examples of both. Performance? I think this is more of a cumulative effect of the Klassic cutter profile combined with the now no longer available "wide-nose" ES bar profile. Of course the advantages of a taller cutter profile and narrow raker are going to be enhanced in wood that favors long, wet, stringy chips.
If I gave you 2 saws to cut w/ without looking at the chain, could you distinguish one chain from the other was the implication. Nothing visual.
Straight bucking cuts? Probably not. To your point, fire-wooding probably doesn't gain much, if anything from the Klassic cutter vs the standard Rapid Super. Timber falling? I bet those guys can appreciate the differences. I know I can tell the difference when plunge cutting with different bar profiles and chain types and I'm no pro faller by any means.
Are you running that hex stuff? The manager at the local hardware store told me about it back last year when we were talking chain. But I haven't looked in there to see if they have it.
Yes on both the 400 and 462. Seems to hold an edge pretty good. Downside is price for both the chain and files. My dealers buy 2 get 1 helps with chain price though.
Sure wish we had some dealers here like that So, if I may ask, what would you say are some obvious other pluses of the Hexa chain and any negatives other than already mentioned? I was thinking of using it only on my MS 400 with 25” light bar. Thanks!
Pretty much what I mentioned earlier. I've only run a 20" bar on my 400 so I don't know how the they run with a longer bar. If you like the 25" with RS or RM chain I don't think you'd be disappointed with the hexa chain.
Thanks farmer steve, I’ll look next time I’m in my dealer and see if they are carrying them yet! My chain choice is RS on everything but smaller limbing saws.
