After doing a search on leather glove repair, with no results. I would have thought this topic would have been hashed out, however what do you guys do with gloves with the finger holes in them. Maybe its the quality of today's leather or are they being made with thinner leather? Looks like I need to give up my leather gloves and go to the latex dipped from HF

Cheap or expensive, firewood splitting wears them out. I like the way spendy leather fits and feels, but it’s crazy to use them for firewood. For me it’s always the left hand glove that wears out first.

I wear out the right fingers. I Gorilla Tape them for a while until the whole glove is spent. I use the latex gloves in warmer weather.

I work in the mineing industry where you get into all sorts of stuff to ruin gloves. Tillman leather gloves are our go to gloves for what they go thru. Not much you can do when the fingers wear out no matter what you are useing unless you wrap duct tape around the holes. I used to and still do like the old yellow chore gloves you can get at TSC or most any farm fleet type store but last time I looked those are up to $25 a five pack.

Turning the leather inside out gives you better grip on the wood and seems to make them last longer.
I have also bought the expensive Buffalo skin gloves and they lasted much longer than cowhide.

I gave up on leather gloves for firewood duties. The dipped gloves last SO much longer and don't need any break in.

What kind of mining and what types of duties are you responsible for? Just curious.

Sand and gravel. Heavy equipment operator, Classifier, wash plants, crushers, welder, you name it. The only thing I wont do is learn to work the dredge. That job makes a man crazy.

Same here, but I don’t mind running the dredge. Out in the middle of the lake you don’t have to deal with anyone.

I was given a pricey pair of leather work gloves as a gift. Hated them for firewooding. PITA to get off if wet or sweaty. Generic latex dipped do the job. Use them, get holes, toss and repeat. I have thicker ones for cold weather. Ill recoat the latex when it wears on those.

And they are cheap, $2-3 per pair. Even if I could buy leather gloves for that price, I still wouldn't buy them, the Atlas gloves are just better for firewood

Why does it do that? Just curious. Is it a dredge in a body of water?

I tore up quite a few pairs of gloves making wood before realizing that there is no glove that will stand up to that particular chore well. I'm a bit of a glove fanatic at times and own many varieties. I have gloves specifically for splitting and stacking wood and then there's gloves for everything else. I get best wear from the wrinkly latex covered gloves at the splitter. I wear the 'foam nitrile' when using a saw or runnig the tractor or whatever. Much greater dexterirty but they don't hold up to handling wood at all. The thicker latex coating holds up better there.

Wood handlers (have winter versions also)

Kind of a company joke. The guys that are dredge operators here are just a little eccentric. Pic is our dredge pushed to shore for repairs.
