I had last weekend off with nothing planned after the Saturday Saint Pat's parade my kids were in. Got home after the parade and noticed I had gear oil running out a rear axle at the passenger wheel. So the adventure of doing a rear diff service and axle pull started so I could replace bearing and seal. A bad bearing will kill a seal and a leaky seal will kill a bearing.

On my half ton I needed to pull the c clip in the diff to remove the axle and for the life of me I couldn't get the axle to slide in far enough. I had to hammer the axle in the last hair then I had to pry the axle out. The c clip grove in the axle had a very proud burr all the way around both edges. When my boy and I were putting it back together I noticed the pinion shaft lock bolt was worn pretty badly. Over a thumb nails thickness of material worn away. Could have been a catastrophic failure during a future log skid. My son thinks that skidding logs with the half ton may be the source of the excessive wear. 128,000 miles and 2nd oil change in rear diff. Truck had 50,000 miles in 10 years when I got it. I changed fluid just because of age when I got it, and discovered it was a quart low from factory. I have changed the trans fluid and filter twice now too.

I priced an axle seal and bearing replacement at $450 at a shop. I cost me a weekend and $88 in parts and oil. One bruised toe and a busted knuckle.

Calling for a windy day. Son has first lacrosse game at the home field field. The school is on top of a hill and it's usually windy there anyway. Going to be fun.

The busted toe was from my first use of a new 3 ton jack. I lifted one end with the handle to clean up the spilled jack oil. I always top of new equipment and grease fittings. Well, the handle came out of the jack and the jack fell on my little toe. I threw the handle, cussed and fussed...then I had to go get the handle to jack truck up.

My daughter hurt her knee playing soccer Monday. Wednesday was Dr, x ray, more Dr visit. At lunch we left hospital to eat. We got to the restaurant and I helped her out of truck. As we crossed the parking lot she crushed my broken toe with her crutch. Causing both of us to stumble. My toe hurts so bad I almost stopped laughing.

So far truck is holding together. Even a poor job will work for awhile. The 1 year warranty on the bearing and seal really inspires confidence. If it equal quality as OEM then I have 12 years and 128,000 more miles before I have to worry.

Did some splitting, hauling and stacking.

I had a Reuben sandwich from the leftover corned beef for dinner. It was so good! Some homemade big Mac sauce on the toasted light rye, then the corned beef, then a slice of muenster, melted, then a little more sauce, then a little sauerkraut, and the top toasted rye. So good! I'll have 1 more sandwich tomorrow for lunch and that'll be it.

I did not plow snow yesterday and was surprised how much melted with the high temp at only 34 degrees; even the snow snakes disappeared. Tomorrow is supposed to be in the 50's so that might finish most of the melting.

I plowed yesterday. After a cold night and high in the 20's I thought the ground would be frozen. When I pushed onto the lawn it tore up a bunch of grass. The snow must have insulated it just enough.

Grass is growing, turned the cows out onto pasture March 16th. Almost 4 week’s earlier than normal.
