*Hi everyone, My name is Russ and I used my splitter vertical today!* I have had a couple dozen or more 30"-40" Doug Fir rounds piled in the processing area since before I had CTS on my wrists. I have finally got around to splitting and stacking. I welded up a foot grating out of 2.25" box tube I had laying around. This is similar to the one T.Jeff Veal has made of pipe. It makes it much easier to maneuver large rounds under the wedge and allows the round to cozy up to the splitter without tipping away from the wedge. I made a keeper strap with two trick wingnuts to hold it in place. I'm pretty happy with the results. This won't convert me to a full time vertical splitter but does make it more pleasant to bust the big rounds down.

Excellent setup! It's not often I run mine vertically either, but when the size of the rounds warrants it, it's great to have that option.

It doesn’t look like the only modification you have made with that splitter. Your Dirty Hands splitter seems to have a lot more pieces than mine.
I set out to make a grate for mine after I seen the one T.Jeff Veal has. Never quite got that far, now I just use a skid steer and a pair of tongs. But that requires a helper. I should still make a grate some day. The strap around the back is a good idea. Nice job

Nice piece of fabrication there Russ. Not often I go vertical either but works great for behemoth rounds.

Nice work getting it done and that good looking wood looks to be worth the effort.

Too much of that would kill my back, luckily I don't get huge rounds very often.

Hi Russ nice setup sorry to hear about your wrist.
I guess it’s okay if you used you splitter vertical as long as you come back and use horizontally

I've had bad luck more than not when I flip the beam up. I tend to noodle or whack em down to size with a maul first these days.

X2. On the rare occasion I can have the splitter on site I'll go vertical on the bigguns.

I love the banter we generate w/ horizontal/vertical, elm/anti-elm and at one time Husky/Stihl (till someone got hurt). It is pure fun on my end. :D

What ever works for you is the best method IMO. Nice job on the splitter foot. I love me some big rounds like that. They produce so many splits. :dex: :stack::stack::stack::stacker:

Raining today so no splitting. Stacked up most of yesterdays splits. 4' X 4' X 12' so exactly 1.5 cords all barkless! A lot of nice thick bark left over! A friend came and got some for the fire pit and I will share the rest with the neighbor (who loves it) and stack the remainder in the shed.
