Can anybody tell me what this is. a coworker split this over the weekend and he’s not sure what it is. he thought it might be oak, but I am questioning that. I am sure someone here can tell me
The featured piece in the pic looks like Blocust bark to me, but the wood doesn't. The piece at the top doesn't look like same bark.
Sassafras is my guess. It’s not oak. Sourwood has deeply furrowed bark, but anything that big would be a unicorn. Big Hickory’s will have similar bark, but I don’t see any dark colored wood.
Looks like Sass to me but that picture makes it hard to have alot of certainty. Could also be BL I've seen the wood come in a wide range of colors. Did he say what it smelled like? Oak smells pretty distinct he should be able to tell by that easily.
He didn't say on smell. I will ask him today when I see him. It doesn't look like BL to me. Any I have seen from our area had more color to it.
Keep hanging around with me and ill turn you into a tree nerd too! Still nice firewood he got. Ash that keeps its bark and has solid meat is getting to be a rare commodity these days.
Well he said it still had some life left in it , for around here that is rare for an Ash Tree. You got me?
I looked at a tree job Sunday. All dead ash to take down in varying states of decay. Maybe 1/3 was good for firewood IMO. Too big of a job for me plus near wires.
