My wife recently got a new carry. 22lr Ruger. Tried talking her into a 9mm, but she's not used to handling firearms and I wanted her to feel comfortable. It's a nice little shooter and ammo is dirt cheap obviously compared to other cartridge's. I'm looking for decent hitting rounds for her to keep at the bedside and came across the Federal Punch. Anyone use it?
Whichever you choose, be sure to run a box or two through the gun for functionality check. I'm typically concerned with consistency in 22 ammo, rather than ballistics, so I don't have a lot to offer here.
In all reality she'll hopefully never use it as you intend here. If i put myself in the place of a robber or home invader, once i heard gunshots i don't think id sick around to find out what caliber it is. Likewise if a person gets hit with a .22 round I'll bet it "feels" like a .45 Main thing is functionality of the weapon and competency of the user. As RCBS stated find some quality ammo that shoots every time. It's hard to make noise to scare off the robber when the gun is jammed or there's a dead round in the chamber you have to clear.
Oh I for sure do not want shot with a 22. They are very deadly, no matter of opinions. Many people have met their end by a bullet from a .22lr.
Yeah i have NEVER met someone that dogs on .22lr, as a defense round, willing to get shot with one. Now for police and people that are regularly and actively in bad situations, I'd want a little more knock down power.
I've been thinking about a 22 carry gun. They really have a lot of capacity too. I'll need to watch those vids in the better defense ammo for a 22. Until then I'm proficient with the 380 Ruger lcp I got from my dad. People say a 380 isn't much, but with good defensive ammo at close range I don't think there would be anyone arguing much. Maybe my wife will use a 22 lr carry gun? At worst it's cheap plinking
I use my .22 for punching holes in paper. Same goes for most my guns realistically. Lol. Now that we talk about it i might have to get out today, while it's still decent.

Hell, I'd hate to get hit by one of my pellet guns. Getting hit by any object moving at over 1,000 FPS is gonna hurt like hell
If she's proficient and can get 2-3 rounds on target rapidly, i can't imagine someone continuing their aggression toward her. Realistically they ain't walking away at that point. I'd like to think most attackers will turn and run the other way at the SIGHT of a gun let alone the sound.
Yeah….If I was stupid enough to break in someone’s house, and heard a chh-chh with an LED light shined at my dome, I’d be re-thinking my life choices. Her little .22 is the least of their worries.
I’m not dogging or disputing that a .22 would dispatch a human. However, if my carry gun is being drawn I already consider the person at the other end dead and want them to be that way ASAP. Pulling a gun out in hopes to scare the aggressor is a pretty stupid move.
I totally get what you're saying being that mine are loaded most the time. I ain't trying to scare them away with loading a round. Looking at it from a womans perspective and them rarely going overboard with force, a 22lr is more than adequate for self defense. How many normal people get to actually use their guns in self defense?
One in the pipe is the way to be! My wife carry’s mace instead of a gun because she would most likely use the mace where she would be less likely to use the weapon. I certainly hope I don’t ever have to use my weapon but most definitely will if I have to.
I think it'd be a tough decision to make in the moment. I don't want to take a life, but I would if it meant protecting my family. Injuring or trying to scare an armed intruder and allowing them to spin/twist the series of events to become a victim and me winding up in jail doesn't sound appealing to me. If they are armed, I don't see many alternatives. Hard to tell if they are or not in the middle of the night while half asleep. Hence the tactical rail mounted flashlight.
