This caught my eye Wednesday afternoon. Yes, taken during the "brightest" part of the day - we have just been socked in with heavy, gloomy overcast for what seems to be years, although it has only been months with just the occasional brighter day. That line of black dots is feathers. Hawk must have gotten itself a meal. I didn't see any blood or tracks/wing marks, so must have caught it in the air. Interestingly that line starts at about the edge of my back porch so the victim may have been trying to get under cover (either under the porch or under the roof). Bird feeders are a good 50' away from that area. When I first saw it, I was hoping it was one of the 5-6 squirrels that hang around. Guessing with them all being really dark feathers that it was a junco.
We see that on occasion around here. Couple weeks back im sitting here on the couch in the morning when i hear a loud thud on the roof. I look up and see some feathers blowing across the skylight. Guessing a hawk got a mourning dove on the roof.
I'm not so much a bird watcher, although I do enjoy hearing a good woodpecker "laugh" when I'm outside. But I spotted this guy today.
Saw a flicker on the suet the other day. Dont see them that often on the ground foraging for ants and been years since ive seen one on the suet. Tried to get pics but they are skittish.
A downy just landed on our empty suet feeder. Gave me a dirty look! Ill brave the elements to refill it.
Well that same flock of hens must've hung close by all day. I was out stacking some wood and had my back to the ravine when i heard this whoosh whoosh whoosh sound. I turned around in time to see the next one take off. If you've never seen turkeys roost they take off from the ground, obviously, and get to any branch they can. Then from there they jump around and around until they find just the right spot. The trees they're in are probably 80-100+ ft tall. All the dark spots in this picture are turkey, 5. There were alot more out there but at probably 60+ yards it was hard to get a picture. (Don't mind my junk pile. Lol) Had this morning dove sit there this morning for at least 30 min. Never saw the other one and no other birds came to the feeder while it was there.
When there's just a small chunk left ill fill the suet. Yesterday morning it had a good piece in it yet. I just have to step out side and grab it. I keep a steel pail with see on the back table. Few scoops and theyre good to go.
Spring must be getting close around here. Toms are chasing the hens, from one side of the house to the other. 17 hens, 4 toms
