    Hers's some "PERSPECTIVE"

Bruce Haedrich is a self-proclaimed science fiction writer, which is what this piece is. It is the same old drivel that's been pontificated for years just regurgitated and repackaged into a cute story. It is full of inaccuracies, falsifications and hyperbole. Haedrich created it several years ago and released it onto the internet so that good little anti green, anti EV social media soldiers would pass it around in an attempt to draw attention to himself so he could sell more books.

Just getting started here on the BS in this essay.

-The central premise of the piece is to demonize batteries, solar panels, turbine blades etc because they have emissions and a carbon footprint (duh) and are therefore no better than fossil fuels. A discussion of the carbon footprint of green energy vs. fossil fuels is pointless without even bringing up the carbon footprint of fossil fuels, which he doesn't. Unless of course you don't believe that carbon emissions are a problem.

-40% of electricity from coal, since when, even when he wrote this coal was a max of 20%

-Batteries, solar panels, turbine blades etc can be and are being recycled. Even if the carbon footprint of the production of green energy commodities was greater than fossil fuels on a per energy basis (doubtful), you can never argue away the fact that burning fossil fuels for energy is "one and done". The minerals and rare earth elements used in green energy with big scary names may be toxic and non-renewable but so are fossil fuels. The toxins used in the production of green commodities can be easily contained and reused unlike when fossil fuels are burnt.

Here's a piece that really goes into how ridiculous this essay is. Better grab a fresh beer...it's long

Dave, there are arguments on both sides of this, but here's something we do NOT need to be doing is ripping up more Earth and mining for more minerals when we don't have to! I Studied this issue for nearly 4 straight years in some forms or another, with over 6 very smart Ph.D. folks, students, Cadets, I worked on Bio-diesel projects, Solar projects, turbine projects, etc... ALL require energy to MAKE energy! Lets look at this way, How the heck do we get the minerals out of the ground? DIESEL burning equipment!!! How do we transport it? Diesel burning equipment! How do we process it? Fire, Fuel, and Electricity! IF we take all the energy required to MAKE this energy saving/making items, the fuel we burn't is twice as much as the energy it will produce! These are FACTS Dave. You just can't twist this. I'll also note this, the Earth is 4.5 BILLION years old, some say not but thats the Geological theory, the earth has been hit by Asteroids, forest fires that burn't for years and years, hundreds of Volcanoes that have erupted thousands of times and all this has gone on the millions of years. The Dinosaurs walked for 450 million years that we know of, BUT YET, We, man have been Industrialized for about 200 years and WE screwed up the Planet? The people that I have work with, and some very skeptical of ANY political force will tell you, NO. I personally have seen Ice cores that go back 100,000 years, frozen in time that show MANY changes to this planet, LONG before we got here. You can call B.S. on things Dave, But so will I and many others that know different. Did you not see the smog and smoke from the Canadian wild fires last year? Where did all that Pollution go? How about Mt. St. Helen in 1980? Pollution has been going into the atmosphere since the creation of the planet. Let us also not forget about a "Polar wobble" with heating climates. Lastly, did you know that 2/3 of Canada BURN'T just 600 years ago for month's and month's. These are facts, but yet were still BREATHING!

Yeah, I'm not going to get into a discussion about climate change with you, I'm sure we both have much better more interesting things to do with our time.

    But, if by this

you are trying to say that the energy it requires to produce a solar panel, turbine etc is greater than the energy that solar panel, turbine etc will produce in its lifetime, I will tell you that you are misinformed.

Dollar for Dollar, Yes! Between the maintenance, up keep, installation, repairs, that is Correct Dave. Green energy does work and especially if you are way out in central Alaska of somewhere way off Grid. BUT, it's up keep and initial investment is NOT worth the long haul pay out. I built Solar panels with College students, their Life expectancy is about 15-20 years. and they die a slow death every year, THEN they need replacement. The Industry will tell you 25-40 but thats BULLS#IT. Solar can only be used a daylight! Battery back up, Wind can only be used up to 25mph (in most cases) battery back up. a Wind mill needs over 250gals + of Lubricating oil for the gear boxes. Blades crack and need replacement about every 2 years, I could keep going but you'll get my point...

There is a very well known talk show host that has a large solar array with battery back up for his ranch. I believe wind mills too. Not to be green, for if / when the grid fails. He said the same thing. You will never get your money back or even break even. Not even close.

That's why the government subsidizes it most times now.

Every 5-7 years all the batteries need replaced he said. At a tremendous cost. He can afford it but most cannot.

Yeah his system is probably not typical of most residential solar arrays that get subsidized by the government. I know about nothing of the "programs" (handouts) now but i don't ever recall anything about household battery systems being included. As far as i understand it they want that "extra" generation, if any, pushed back on the grid.

Plus it's not like you buy a solar panel and it makes power forever. What's gonna happen when panels start failing at a large rate. Will they just get left on house rooftops and in fields/yards because the owners can't afford to replace them or are we going to give them more tax money?

What people want is the preverbial purpetual motion machine when it comes to producing energy. Not gonna happen. Tesla probably was closets to a solution years ago but look at what the powers that be did to him. Every time I hear of a "public servant" (and I use that term very lightly) pushing green energy I have to raise an eyebrow in skepticism and want to dig deeper and follow the money. People making 6 figure incomes dont become billionaires in 4 to 8 years because they are lucky or have a great personality. But that is just me. I wouldnt give 2 chits if cell phones and computers all just went away and I could go back to the way my life used to be before we all had to get connected. Now if I was to find a vien of dilithium crystals to to help power my matter/anti matter warp drive I may have a differant opin on the whole situation.
Sarcasm button now pushed into the off position.

Kinda hard for me to put any stock in a piece written by someone who doesn't know the difference between a windmill and a wind generator.

Every now and then the intersection between smart and stupid presents itself.

If only you could mount a car alternator and electric motor on a skateboard and it would power itself indefinitely. On paper it sounds like a good idea. In the real world..... not so much.

Hmmm, interesting concept. Might work but when the huddled masses need goods delivered by rail or a truck grossing 80,000 plus I hope they got a really big skate board.

Its not possible.... at all. Fiction and gravity are king in that situation. Once we figure out how to eliminate friction we might be on the way. They might be able to reduce it by half but that'll never get to 0.

[QUOTEa Wind mill needs over 250gals + of Lubricating oil for the gear boxes.[/QUOTE]

I read the thread and the article Welder Dave posted is pretty much spot on. The counter arguement(s) in the other article are nonsense.
I have a lot of experience with this subject as a manufacturing business owner. I'll comment in detail when I have more time, but I'll address two details right now..

As stated, Windmill gear boxes require a LOT of petro based lubricant. Due to the massive torque stress on the ring & pinion gear, there is no lubricant that can cushion the tooth load.
20+ years of lube development and still no solution. Improvements..? Yes, but no oil can do the job with out help. This is why windmill towers catch fire. The lube fails, the gear set galls and heats up and catches the oil on fire.
The current solution is to reduce friction via coating the ring & pinion with diamond-like coatings. (DLC)
DLC is an expensive process and the process produces toxic by-products. It also does not fully mitigate the lubrication issue.

There is not an electric motor on the planet that produces the volumetric efficiency that equals a ICE. ( conventional or turbine )
Fighter jets/passenger jets will never have electric motors. The battery(s) size and weight to power the engine far exceed any benefit.
Same for ships, trains or even semis.
Show me an electric log truck that will keep up with a diesel powered truck in the mountains.
Currently there is experimentation with electric drag race cars. They can not build a motor/battery combo that is light enough to exceed the capability of an ICE powered car.
Last weekend, a Nitro Funny Car with a 500 ci engine ran over 341 mph in Florida. The fuel tank holds 25 gallons. A full fuel load weighs about 300 lbs. The car weighs 2150 with a full tank.
No electric motor/battery combo weighing 2150 will come close to 341 mph.

For the record, my Next door neighbor here in NJ goes all over the world, He sells various (Bearings) for the Input shafts and blade turning gear mechanisms, he's been telling me they now have an issue with Hot and Cold stress fractures in the races of these bearings in cold climate. Only makes sense! Now, they are Pre-heating oils to keep the bearings warm...  Electricity! Also, "Diesel generator" back ups for when their own power fails!  Now, think of the power required to pump, keep and circulate pre-heaters oils from the base of a wind turbine to the top and back. o_O ALL energy! Just look outside the box at ALL that goes into these.
Some of these bearings are 1/4 million dollars! That's a lot of Diesel.
