Yep, I've always heard river birch as betula nigra. But I'm sure it may be different regionally. Like calling tulip tree "poplar" here. But it's not really poplar.

Do noodled rounds count as splits? I noodled some red oak and American elm today.

What is "noodled" ?

 

Instead of splitting a round in half its a method of using a chainsaw to half/section it up. Lay the round on bark edge and slice along the grain. The wood chips look like noodles hence the name.

 

It's when ya make a big ol mess of noodles on the ground. They're noodles if you have an imagination. Lol

 

Recent cut of mine showing noodled chunks of 24" +/- diameter sugar maple rounds. Note the noodle sawdust.

Ahhh yes ok. I do this too but have never heard that term. Makes sense. Yep I'll count noodling as a method for sure Eric Wanderweg

We cut some very old ones from the yard to clear some space. They were more like trees than bushes. They didn't look too healthy anymore. I'll try to get pics of the splits.

 

Got some pics. Not much purple in them, but the stumps didn't have much either, just a few bands.

 

Not as bad as last year! I can't complain, it's been steady but not overwhelming. For some reason it has been raining every weekend with any nice days happening during the work week. We had a couple wind storms that were responsible for the trees coming down but so far no buildings, fences or power lines affected.

 

Around here we call it River Red Birch, and it only grows along the river banks and is very prominent alongside the Merrimack River watershed. I see it all the time while fishing .Over the the last couple of decades landscape companies have been planting them in housing and industrial developments, and it's available at nurseries. I have cut and burned quite a bit over the years.
