What do you make of this stuff? Box elder or some sort of maple? Has a bright red ring between the heartwood and sapwood

Some sort of white oak but the bark is long and flakey. Almost looks like shagbark

Hand splitting it is like splitting a block of clay IMO. It does split on a hydro. Ive never milled any but there was a miller here who said it sliced like butter on his band saw mill. Not sure about CSM though.

I would leave this one. Looks like Hackberry. Not worth the effort IMO

Same. Wouldn't think it would give off a good smoke, but I have never tried it.

This one I am the most curious about. That red should be easy to ID unless it’s some weird rot. Anyone care to hazard a guess?

Oh boy, nice straight saw logs showed up today. Not sure what these are? Any idea if they are worth milling?

Might be basswood, which I would say don’t mill it. Unless you know a carver or two. They love that stuff.

This one looks like cottonwood. I would leave it if there is better stuff. its very hard to split, very stringy.

2nd vote for basswood, It cuts and splits easy but very low btu's.

Good call, I need kindling. Split a few rounds of basswood and a few of white pine. Let’s see which one dries quicker

Resplit some hickory for use in the smoker today. What sort of critter is living in the sapwood?

    Hickory dung beetle!

Never seen one before. Must be the adult that lays the eggs that hatch into the little boring worms.
