I walk around the woods like a crazy person. I look for standing dead, black locust, no bark, etc. Then I knock on it to see if it is hollow. Came across this one today. This is what I'm after. Black locust gold.
Nothing wrong with that at all. Looks an awful lot like the Oak I've been getting from my SIL's place. That's the stuff I've been going after on purpose, because it's already pretty dry and I may need it sooner than 3 years down the road. Good score. I've found myself so far away from the tractor, I can't see it, while wandering around looking for the "gooder stuff".
Awesome! That's like the red oak I was cutting this weekend! I couldn't believe that it was actually dry but I am sure it had been out there 10+ years
After seeing that almost pixel-like grain, I think some of the wood in my stacks is actually BL, I thought it was Siberian Elm. Or do those two species have very similar grain? Sweet score, regardless!
A lot of woods have that. Those are known as "medulary rays". They are horizontally arranged cells in the wood, responsible for transporting sugars. You'll see a lot of that in maple too. It would have made me question the BL call on this one, but over the weekend I cut up a BL about that size and saw a ton of them in there too.
If you can afford to be snobby where you are, then by all means be a wood snob. You know nobody here will think any different of you.
Here at FHC, "snob" might not be a bad thing like elsewhere. It only means that you've worked hard toward being fortunate enough to be selective. What a great find.
Ha! Thats funny.. Only uneducated wood burners are not truly picky or if they are they burn only WET oak because its the best! Id say your right on track and smart!
Glad to hear I'm not the only crazy person, after last winters blow to the stash I've been doing alot of that dead standing looking along with the regular css.
