Passed a tree crew cutting on Monday. (seems like i pass them all the time, doesnt it?) A way i dont go that often. Made a point to check it out this afternoon. Gnarly wood and too tough to retrieve. Not worth the effort. This Norway maple had been taken down next door since. Knocked and the guy gave me the go ahead. 400 made easy work of it. Mostly nice straight Goldilocks limb wood. Only the gnarly trunk left behind. Full load. With the wet conditions i got lazy and tossed it in rather than stack. Ill do that when i think it wont be a full load. It split easily with the X27. Offloaded at storage. Rounds have been piling up over the last two weeks. Couple wheelbarrows of nuggets/shorts. Funny how i just posted that bark trivia thread about Norway maple. Its great firewood, splits easily, dries in a year and good btus. Wish i could score it more often.
I’m so jealous that you stumble upon these amazing scores! Those Norway Maples get huge. I had a neighbor in Denver that had a MASSIVE one in his yard. I’ve never burned any. Don’t see many of them in Colorado. Norway maple is on my firewood bucket list.
Very popular yard planting here. Common to see nice straight ones along property lines growing unchecked in urban areas. Invasive species too. Scores like these remind me of my early years of scrounging where i wouldnt use a saw and grab what i could. I bucked the gnarly trunk to get the wood trapped underneath.
Will Asplundh come back and clean up what’s left? How many days do you have before that happens? I rarely see them cut down trees. There’s plenty they ought to, but they just continue trimming garbage.
Not sure if it was Asplundh that did this. When i drove by the other day i didnt see what company was doing the work. When i scouted farther up it appeared all the recent cutting was gone. I assume the MO is for the tree company to clean up the mess. Wires were almost directly overhead. When i spoke with the Asplundh boss earlier this month he said certain crews will trim while others taking trees down. Ive seen them scoop up wood the next day or six months later its still there.
Split all the 16" rounds yesterday and loaded them up to be brought back home. Second row from left is the Norway. I store mostly bundle wood and a couple cords of general cordage wood here. Some will be bundle wood and the rest general cordage. Got some stacking to do this afternoon
Yep Norway maple is good firewood. We have 1 on my home lot. It's at the point where it is getting uglier. Branches fall off of it and they end up going into my stacks.
Stacked in one of my old spots. Mixed with some older beech splits. Single row gets a good breeze coming up the ravine below. Needs a little more to make a half cord. Nugget bin with BL on the right. Bundle wood temporarily stacked until main rack empty.
