I have a couple month old Hearthstone Mansfield that's smoking during operation, I looked inside it and found this gasket hanging down from the top. It doesn't seem to just sit around that edge that you can see. Where do I need to put this back? Thanks for any help or advice![IMG]

I don't know, but it looks like it is suppose to sit where it is hanging. They get crusty and stiff. Try to cut the loop and feed it from below. It still won't be perfect at all but may help. If you are near a bigger city or any hardware most have rolls of gaskets that you can buy buy the foot. Call a local dealer if you need exact part. Hopefully someone will be by your thread quick. I'd start calling right away. Hope you have city heat as back up. Good luck to you.

Every time you open the by-pass it will want to fall again. I 'd try to light a fire and leave the gasket. Does it smoke when you leave the by pass open after the flue gets warmed up a bit? If not, then just don't shut the by pass.

Is it possible to cement that gasket back down? Afraid I didn't find much in the manual, just "follow the directions in the gasket kit"

Can you burn it without engaging the cat? Leave the bypass open?

That looks like a bypass gasket. You should be able to feel a groove all the way around where the bypass sets on. Get some gasket cement and stuff it back in.

I would highly recommend heating that stove slowly at those temperatures, regardless what it is made of. You’re liable to crack any stove at those temperatures building a quick hot fire. Even a small fire at those temps will feel extremely warm. You need your stove to function in those temps, so you don’t need to chance breaking it by getting greedy for heat. Even steel needs time to expand and especially stone or cast iron.

Sort of like putting cold water on extremely cold fingers to warm them up…you don’t want to put hot water on those cold fingers.

The local dealer is seeing if Hearthstone will warranty the gasket. The dealer said the gasket goes around the bottom of the bypass and then up in a groove in the roof of the stove, that's where I had put it. If I put it just around the bypass vent there was about 2 or 3 inches of slack. I'd like to see a diagram or I'll go into town and look at a stove at Axmen to see if it's right. I called and left a message on the Hearthstone tech line, but didn't hear anything back from them. The stove and house stay heated well at 40 below, I also run a propane Renai furnace, it's a small house built with 16 inch logs in Northwest Montana

Did you call the number I left you ? It's the direct line to Jim the best tech at Hearthstone. He usually picks up or get's back to you. Also it would be nice if your local dealer would give some input in helping you out.At -40 it's an emergency situation. What kind of people are you dealing with ?

No call back yet from that number, I put the gasket back where I thought it would go and fired the stove back up. -41 in Montana is colder than normal, usually it's only -10 to -20 this time of year. Emergencies up here are when the older houses and trailers pipes freeze. We have a small log house and kept warm. Still waiting to see if Hearthstone will authorize a tech to come out and glue it in, I haven't found a diagram showing for sure where it goes or got to town to see one in a stove.

I called Hearthstone again and Jim answered, he told me that the gasket only goes around the lip of the bypass and is only there to cushion it and is not really needed. He told me that I could glue it around the lip or take it out.
