Usually at this time of year there are tons of firewood for sale adds on CL in this area and weirdly enough there arent really any for this area right now. Wonder what the cause of that is?
Strange, plenty here though. I look for free wood often. Anything that says black locust and free. Never see any though
Typical CL postings around this way. Prices seem a little steeper than last year. Debarked and kiln dried is outrageous
yup. we had a very strong, very localized storm go through in mid july. Hit a particular area that is not know for its residence being particularly friendly to non-lake shore property owners, if you get my drift... I stopped in the morning after the storm and helped cut an access road through the carnage. Was back the next day asking around who needed help clearing their yards. Few couple houses they wanted ME to pay THEM for the privledge of clearing up THEIR yard? WTF? Now if it was straight grained oak or maple I might have been willing to deal. But this high browed dweebs had jack pine and bass wood for the most part. Found a summer cabin owned by a group of teachers from the cities. Cleared their yard which was actually about half oak. Their neighbors came over and asked if I would be willing to take a leaner down. Usually I won't touch a tree near a house but they were worried about it and the tree service was a week back logged. The tree was heavily favoring away from the house and I choked it up high with the winch on principle. Fell right where I wanted it to. Got invited to help clean up their property and hauled oak from them for several days. Local tree services couldn't keep up so pretty soon I had half the neighborhood asking me to help them get their yards cleared. Oh yeah, the goof balls who wanted ME to pay THEM, they showed up a week later asking me to come take it all away...for free.... Occasionly I find a good deal on craigslist, got a warn 8274 for $100 last spring, but for the most part I just sit back and wonder WTF these folks are smoking...
I had a co-worker who asked me to come cut down some ash & maple trees at his place. I could have some of the wood and some was earmarked for his neighbor lady. Not a problem. Then it turned into wantig me to pay for the wood. Let's see: I have to drive there I have to cut trees down I have to cut down trees up into rounds I have to use my chains, gas, oil, and saws I have to help load it up to bring to his neighbor all for a cord of maple... I'm not paying a thing. I'll do it to help you and I get some wood out of the deal or I'll stay at home and watch the Univ. of Michigan game. He saw that people were selling firewood on craigslist. Sometimes I really hate that site, other times I love it. Yes I did cut for him and I did get a cord of maple out of it. No I did not pay for it.
We've got a lot of wood adds here From sellers... But get a few that show wood that was either cut down by them or a tree company and wanting money to haul off. What's funny some of them call it seasoned wood...
That's was a fair deal in working condition also @Chvymn99. Mine came already mounted on the jeep not working (cheap ford starter solenoid). OP: wood ads are popping up locally but not to full extent yet.
Yup, got lucky. Spotted it a hour after it was posted. Was located over near Grand Rapids,mn. I called and the guy said he already had some tire kickers but first vine first served. I took a comp day from work and hauled butt on my FZ1. Was doing 80 in a 65 at one point... Beat another guy out by 15 minutes. Looked a little goofy having an 8,000 pound winch ratchet strapped on the back of a motorcycle going home. Turned out the cable was bird caged at mid length, the factory wires on the winch were cracked so I redid them with 1/0. Still a good deal. Sucker hauls butt that's for sure. Feeding it with 2/0 from the battery with a dedicated ground. Working on a tray for a pair of group 65N just for the winch.
That would be a sight to see. 100# winch strapped to a motorcycle! Yes that winch is super fast 86fpm w/o load. I only allow a few people feed the cable back in. My 10,000lb receiver mounted china thing runs like 4fpm w/o load.
Slim pickens here too. I figured around mid June after it had rained every other day it would be a tough year on vendors wood supply especially if it rained all summer. It did. I wrapped up a couple more supply contracts late July/early August so I'd be on top of the game this fall/winter. Had to pay more for wood but its's on deck ready for customers. In the last few weeks the pallet shops have raised low grade prices 40-50% just to get inventory built for winter. A crane mat builder nearly doubled the price of log loads if you figure in the production bonus. It's gonna be ugly on the price of firewood for awhile. I'm looking out nearly 2 years on a 30-50% price increase. I'm actually up 30% just in the last 2 months and looking at more increases monthly before December. Funny thing is ,,,,, many of my regulars who order/take delivery in spring have not yet contacted me. Gonna be an interesting year for firewood and pellet prices. I see nothing but up,,,, and a lot. If ya got'em ,,, smoke'em. Start hoarding !!!!
That's kind of what I was getting at with less people supplying wood it's going to be high priced and hard to get this year for a lot of folks! I have had that same issue so many times I finally quit asking because 95% of the people thought their tree was a gold mine!
Especially yard wood. Most of the rural properties I have worked are pretty decent. But some of the stuff I find in city trees almost makes it not worth while.
Oak fence boards are hard to come by around here. And if you can get them they are up .75-1.00 in price since spring. A client I know who owns 5k acres of timber land says pallet mills are buying everything they can get their hands on and that those are the grade of log that get cut for fence boards as well.
