Colder here. What's your temp? What ya burnin?

Hey spotted owl , Madrone is my second choice in firewood! Very BTU dense, not a great deal of ash and fairly fast cure. It sure coals up nice and lasts but is harder to start than Doug Fir. Not terribly fond of the crooked and uneven splits that are a bit more difficult to stack than fir but an all around performer. Just wish it was more available round here. Plenty of trees but not so many cut down and others there first. Glad you have some in the stacks!

 

Just threw in my second load for the day. Cherry & elm are what I remember putting in. We are up to 6 now, but the wind here is what’s complicating matters. Lots of drifting across out north/south running roads. Beautiful blue skies without a cloud one to be seen. Looks like a chilly week for us here. This is when I can really start churning through the firewood. Good thing I’m prepared for it as I’m sure most of you are

 

We were pretty light this morning and church. To be expected with weather like this, but I’m glad church wasn’t cancelled. Went out early to check the sidewalks there and ended up stuck in the road driving there. Snow was drifted across road for several hundred yards and I underestimated how deep it was. Spent about half hour getting unstuck and elected to go back home and get warmed up before going to the service

 

I'm getting out the "all nighter" logs for the next couple of days Jason.

 

Need to prop up the far end on a saw horse so it self feeds as it burns down

 

I will be bringing in some full rounds for overnighters here as well. Just not as long as yours.....

 

If youre planning on staying their a long time Id look at redoing the insulation alot of it can be done somewhat cheap and easy. Our old house was about 90 years old and whoever did some of the remodels just sided over old windows etc. They didnt even fill the voids with insulation or cover it with osb. We even found old tools from back in the day in some of the voids and news paper dated from the 40's used for insulation.

 

I have a friend that did something similar while working in his shop. A long log with bungee cords to keep it self feeding! Gawd! Might have been a few beers involved too.

 

Doing a shagbark vs cherry burn time test right now both seasoned a little more than a year.

 

74/19. Burning a couple splits of cherry in the Fireview as a primer to the overnight burn. Overnight low is supposed to be around 12.



Getting some serious flames.

 

11/71 wind finally a little quieter. 4 expected overnight. Have some maple, oak and a split of locust simmering in the Buck 91.

 

That's almost as funny as seeing Jerry Jones face during the packers/ cowboy game!

 

Shagbark won burn timewise but not by as much as I thought it would. It off gassed way longer and with dark blue flames. While the cherry just burnt up and coaled.

 

It’s getting ugly!


73 inside temp.

 

-3 with a wind chill of -20, at the moment. Temps will be falling some more. Furnace will be running again tonight.

 

22/70. Screaming winds most of this weekend but they appear to be tapering off. Been burning mostly shagbark hickory.

 

How's your Woodstock handling the cold ?

 

I have my Mansfield on the first floor and The Hearthstone one in the basement.When the temps hit mid teens and lower I run both stoves.This keeps the house toasty and the furnace off.I wish you folks in the midwest had my Hearthstone One.It's the only stove I've had that can deal with below zero temps.I've had many of the major stoves Lopi,The Summit.Woodstocks,Blaze King,Coal burners,Performer Z ,and a couple others I can't remember.Other that the coal burners the Hearthstone One was the only stove that kept us toasty in subzero temps. The One gives off so much heat that the cold water in the water heater comes out warm enough to take a shower .If you folks out west can't find a wood stove that will do what you want consider a coal burner.Your temps are deadly if you lose power and your furnace won't come on to help out your burners.If our power goes out the stoves will kept us toasty with no concerns.That's the way it needs to be.
