-17F at 8:00 am with a wind chill of -35F according to the app on my phone.
Not supposed to get above zero until Tuesday.
Burning a mix of hackberry, mulberry and elm. I don’t think I bought in enough wood the other day, gonna have to restock probably Monday night but hopefully it will last till Wednesday

 

Give us a run down on how you deal with the coaling situation and the the best way to run your Cat/a Cat.

Wow crazy, at least to me, that Iowa and Nebraska are colder than Minnesota and it is cold here. -7/68 (on thermostat in hallway about 30 feet from insert) but the NG furnace did run last night/morning. No way my Travis Industries insert can heat the house enough when it's this cold outside. It definitely helps reduce my heating cost. This house is a 2319 sq. foot walk out. Insert is on the main floor so if the furnace doesn't run for a long time the lower level gets pretty chilly could be 58-60. Our oldest son is living here for now and his room is down there. He doesn't complain about it but my goal isn't to freeze him out. I have toyed with the idea of adding a wood stove to the lower level family room. It would be very nice to have one down there. But the cost of a nice stove plus the cost of the chimney doesn't seem to make it worthwhile to me. At least not right now. The insert alone made the furnace not run nearly all day yesterday. Often with the fire burning hot long enough it is 70-74 on the thermostat which if set at 68 is not calling for heat. Sorry for the long post but drinking coffee by the fire on a morning like this causes this type of post

 

I'm running an Ashley Hearth 3200, in a 1000 sq ft house, that is about 140 years old, with leaky windows and not the best insulation. Got the stove at too good of a price to pass it up. It was 60 when I woke up this morning, but this stove can raise the temp 10 degrees, in about an hour. Which is why I got this size of stove.

We're at -7 outside, right now, BUT the wind is at 3 mph, unlike yesterday. Inside is back up to 74.

 

More of the same up here, currently -33C feels -45C. Had my 2 part sleep, wife got up a few times to run water, and so far (at least) so good. Poor furnace needed 5 minutes of heat from a blow dryer to get going. Furnace/stove/oven triple team to keep our sanity. Should be nice weather in about a week.

 

Yes. I'm excited to learn today. How do you clean your cat without cooling down the stove also Dennis? I ended up having to at least blow out my cat about every three weeks. That isn't very handy when you are trying to keep the house warm. I talked to Woodstock several times, and the answered all Lauren's questions. (I believe that was her name, and she was very nice) Standard questions. Yes wood is way below 20%. Species of wood burned. Gaskets, proper setup. draw correct, OAK installed if needed. All of those questions were asked. The only home that seems not to have a problem up here that runs a fireview is a couple in their 80's that has a double wide trailer. It works for them because their walls are short. Like a trappers cabin, the heat pools up much lower. You mentioned it only gets 28 below at the coldest, that means it works for you in your setting. Going to visit a factory and becoming friends with the folks doesn't make what they sell perfect for everyone else. This goes for electric vehicles in my area of the country also.

Romantics doesn't help folks all that much. But if you learned something that the makers don't know anything about, then I'd love to learn. I can help more people if this knowledge was shared. I will say Woodstock is probably the most customer friendly company I've dealt with in decades. Not beating up on your team, I'm sincere with my questions and good intent.

 

Warmed up here a bunch this morning. Sitting right at 19 below. Fir heating up the sauna for the Sunday day of rest.

 

Rich,we are probably different than most folks on here.
We run a junk 3200p vogelzang. It's been modded into what I call a modern smoke dragon.
It heats our 100yr old drafty 3ksqft (counting basement) well as long as the wind is low.
When the wind blows hard here and we get below 15f we struggle to stay comforatable

 

-3/64 when I got up this morning. Loaded up with red oak and house is up to 68. High today of 5. Low below zero again tonight.

Up to 3f, -13wc my plan for 80+ might of been a bit optimistic house is currently at 77 with 2 large pieces of cherry and a giant piece of red maple. I need to get outside and do something or Im gonna go stir crazy.

 

Just came back in after taking care of the chickens, pigs, and rabbits. The rabbits are fine, chickens are fine, and the pigs are griping about the cold. The chickens are in their hoop house that is attached to the coop. I collected eggs too. Temp is still well below zero and the wind drives it to about -40. I haven't felt that cold while doing chores in a long time. The rabbits seem to love this weather.

woke up to 65 in the house, so I filled up the cook stove and it is pretty nice in here right now.

we have 3 pigs, 20 chickens, and 29 rabbits.

 

It was -3° this am. 72° in the house then, now it's warmed up to plus 1 degree. House at 73° now, despite having to let the pups out a couple of times.

Oak, and ash in the quadrafire 4100.

I heard the NG furnace go on this am. That's fine and that happens when it's under 5°.

 

We have warmed up quite a bit since the -40c/-40f of yesterday. We had -25c/-13f this morning. Ill be feeding the stove mostly doug fir today and maybe a few pieces of apple.

It's about 70 in the house right now. Still warming up. Its 160+ years old, so not a lot of insulation, if any in places. Definitely a cool draft on the floor, but not bad. Lots of btu's is the key!
