Well, I reconned with my grandson this morning and thanks to the fantastic folks here on FHC and the great weather reports he has decided to take the southern route across I-40 and even though it likely adds a day or more to his travel time it’s definitely the best decision. I’m extremely grateful to the FHC family for your gracious contribution of information and guidance.

    Kindest Regards!

He will like his drive through the gorge. Nice way to see SC in the rear view mirror

Not familiar with the 3 sisters.
Going west Laramie pass would be down but probably still not fun this time of year.
Up around Eisenhower is best left to all wheel drive Subarus and such this time of year also. I love traveling the west but it’s a less nerve wracking during the other 3 seasons

three sisters is the big hills between Ft Bridger and the Utah border. All back to back and as big or bigger than Laramie hill.

the portion known as “highway to heaven” can and will catch you off guard. I’ve seen trucks hit over 100 mph with brakes boiling smoke they are so far gone.

There are a few 2-lane US highway options to get over the mountains, but the weather this time of year is so likely to be bad, the risk isn’t worth it.

you can go up across the north and run 94 across North Dakota and Minnesota to Billings and then run 90 to Missoula and drop south to salt lake. Montana will have 8 passes for you to go across and then you have to get through Yellowstone and drop into Idaho on two-lane. All in dead of winter.

if you thought Wyoming had wind? Livingston MT makes it look tame.

80 though Wyoming, as it is right now, closed.

you’ll have Laramie hill, elk mountain and the sisters to get across. Then you have the hill to climb up and into salt lake if you stay on 80.

70 will be the climb over Eisenhower.
If this gives you an idea how bad it can be.

The southern routes will be 40 and take you over flagstaff. Be winter minded here as well.

Or you can stay on I-20 all the way to El Paso to Vegas and then head north. The most likely path to not close due to snow storms.

Well, thought I would give you an update. Grandson decided to take the most southerly route. Down through Atlanta, Montgomery and then hook up with I-10 in Mobile. He has a USAF buddy living in Biloxi he can visit with and then go cross country from there. It was probably the best decision for him as there was some unusual bad weather in Shreveport, La and other areas along I-20. Trip will be a little longer but more dependable weather wise.

Thanks again for all of the information!

I'd like to know how he got licensed without knowing what an emergency runaway truck stop is for. Heartbreaking.

There’s a 5 1/2% grade that drops you from 8700’ elevation down to 7200’ in Laramie WY on the east side of town.

from the Abe Lincoln memorial into town.

We used to live in Shreveport and then Mandeville, LA. Sure do miss having a “mud bug” boil with andouille sausage, sweet corn

Well, grandson is battling icy roads across I-10. Semi’s in the ditch. Highway Patrol routed traffic off I-10 but not sure exactly where, will talk with him later today. He can’t get any further South without going into the Gulf of Mexico!

It stinks that he had to travel during this weather we are experiencing. Sorta used to it up here but when it goes so far south it's a real hardship.

So true! During summer/fall would have been much easier (and quicker). But, when a good employment opportunity comes along you’ve got to strike when the poker’s hot :)
