Found on FBM. IDed it by the end color, but a LOT farther than i would normally go for a score. My usual MB scores are a wheelbarrow or two at a time volume wise and hard to come by. 34" cut off at the stump. 6' tall stump. 28" bar on the 500i. Teeming with all types of metal as i hit it twice. Noodling and the Isocore sectioned it up. Random pics. Biggest load of MB ive ever cut! Lots of nuggets and shorts What was left behind. Unloaded at storage. Biggest ive ever seen. What is an average size where its a common tree FHC?
You weren’t kidding about the size of that tree or the metal Heck of a long drive too, but seriously how often do any of us lowly CT hoarders ever get the chance to cut that much mulberry? Still plenty there for another trip too
Thats a BIG O' Mulberry... Thats about as big as I've seen, been around a while by the looks of the metal... ... But with a yard tree what do you expect? Man all that meat and tators you left? Just too much metal in the rest? How far? Thats got me drooling... you know how much smoked cheese I could I could smoke.... Nice find...
Outstanding score!! How far was the drive? I’d go a good clip for that much MB. The couple I’ve had were 20-24”. Sucks about the metal though.
Just over an hour. Three family house with a postage stamp yard the metal didnt surprise me. I saw one clothesline pulley in his FBM pics. The prior scroungers had started several cuts but couldnt roll the logs. One i took over their cut and hit the chain...why they stopped. Not exactly that easy to get a cut straight enough so the split comes out okay. A lot of the sections will get noodled into pretty "splits" Im doubting much metal left in the bigguns, but the rest is pretty gnarly. I really dont feel like field sharpening a 36" chain or two if i opted to go back. Dang it Kevin, youve planted the seed!
Just over an hour. When i was noodling i thought of you and your razor sharp square ground chains. First one hit the chain near the beginning and i swapped. Second turned out to be a full skip. I was thank full for that when hit metal the second time and hastily sharpened it. Had the 25" bar and chains for back up. Wondering what lurks in those two bigguns metalwise?
Thats one of the biggest MB's Ive seen Id be curious how old it was. Should keep you busy for a while.
That last yard tree of my friends, the tree service guy hit metal, stopped and put the saw back in the cut and tried to saw through whatever was in there. It was painful to watch. I cut around it and have the piece here, I’m eager to see exactly what it was. Just need to pop it open. Without a doubt the biggest MB I’ve seen. Are you going back for more?
I'm not sure how I feel about it to be honest. Metal quickly makes the best wood not worth it to me. Glad you got a load of mulberry out of it! Are the chains salvageable?
Any other wood i would be left it but i get rather giddy when i discover a mulberry score even with the risk involved with this one. I sharpened half of one earlier. A couple teeth were well blunted and a lot of meat left. Snow started here a couple hours ago so ill spend some time sharpening tomorrow. The longer bars done get run often and need to reorganize them.
That's an awesome score. Every once in awhile you'll see a big mulberry around here. Here's a picture of one from a few years ago. Not sure if the picture does it justice. It's big. That Honey Locust to the right of it is a nice tree, probably 10" or so.
Biggest here that I can remember was only the trunk. 48" base, 54" crouch by 9' long. My best guess was just over a cord and got it back in one load.
That is an incredible pile of mulberry. I hope your roi makes it worthwhile. Being a hand sharpener I don’t think I could purposefully wreck a long chain.
That is a whopper and I’m sure your truck was squatted pretty good. Mulberry is heavy stuff. Summer of ‘22 I had a 38” diameter mulberry get dropped off. It wasn’t very round and it was a pain in the rear end but well worth it. That at least looks to be mostly straight grained.
That's a big tree Brad! I don't think there is any mulberry here where I live. It must be good BTU for you to bust out the 36 inch bar.
Well didnt break out the 36...yet! 28" on the 500 in the OP pics. Tempted to go back with the 36". MB is rare around here and rarer as a score so its a treat when i find some. Great firewood too that coals well and spits a lot.
