Annual winter haul.....2023

I fell, block and haul away all my firewood in winter. I then split in March sometime, typically. I'm out of the woods for the year by the time the trees bud out. The past few winters though I've been taking time off of work at the end of the year and my nephew has been coming down for a few days between Xmas and New Years to help, as he loves cutting wood. During those years, I am able to accumulate all the wood by the 1st of January.

This year I've had off of work starting 12/20 through 1/2. I went out into the woods myself a handful of hours a day on 12/20 through 12/24 and gathered maybe about half of what you see in the photo below. Then my 17 year old nephew came down this past Friday around noon. We ate some lunch and headed out till dark. Then we worked sun-up to sun-down Saturday and did the same on Sunday. We got up this morning and finished hauling a couple loads we had cut up yesterday and then called it quits. He has a 2.5 hour drive back home and wanted to rest a bit before heading home.

Here's a few photos my other half took while she came out with our dog to get some fresh air and to see how we were doing.



Here's where my wood pile sits as of now. You can see my nephew on top of the pile with his chainsaw. The pile below is a bit deeper than it is wide. The small rounds stacked off to the left is 1 full cord (measured). I use them to top off my rows once I get what's there split and stacked. I'm thinking there is around 11-13 full cord in total. He is coming back in a couple weeks to cut some more. He was on a mission to get the pile out the stump you can see in the far lower left corner of the photo (it's as far as I can go, as need to keep an access area open to be able to drive the ATV through). He is planning on coming back down in two weekends so we can accomplish that goal. LOL Oh, he's also going to be helping his dad cut next weekend at their property, but he says it will be easier because it's all pine.

What do yall go through per year?

I get out to the woods as often as I can, year round, wooding as an excuse to get out (rather than hunting I guess).
I live in a city.

Since my kiddo got married, I've forgotten how great a second body out there with you really is.

I have ~60 cord c/s/s as of right now. I've sold ~14 cord over the past year though and another 5 cord to Joe P back a few years ago to help him get ahead. I'm currently burning stuff that was c/s/s in spring '15 (still from the same winter's haul that I sold Joe). I will be done with that 2015 stuff in a few weeks. I then will be moving on to the Spring 2016 stuff.

Not nearly close to what I produce. Typically around 4ish cords.

Here's a photo I took on 12/28 through the patio doors -BEFORE- my nephew came to help, it shows the pile from the other side and the size of it prior to him helping and what I accumulated by myself. You can see why I need to keep access open between the pile and the wood stacks. What is shown stacked is what I partially have. There is quite a bit more stacked off camera.

Awesome. I wish I could see my stacks from the house. Mine are all behind the privacy fence around the pool. Don’t tell Miss July, but I would much rather look out the sliding glass doors and see stacks of firewood than a swimming pool. I go back behind the fence sometimes just to look at the stacks and check to make sure they are ok. Gives me that warm fuzzy feeling. lol

 

Probably true for most of us. That famous quote “chop your own wood and it will warm you twice” doesn’t include all the warm feelings in between from admiring your stacks.

 

Took a short cut (pronounced "gravel road") on the way home yesterday and drove down a couple spurs.

Lots of nice tops left over from logging last summer. Not much walking/hauling involved.

Well, might as well head out on Thursday since there's no snow coverage.

Started snowing last night....5" so far.

It'll be there come spring.
