Big oak across the creek. Banks are a little steeper than they seem in the pics. I can’t get anything but a 4wheeler close to it.
Can you get to the other side? Cut it loose from the stump and drag it out, assuming you have a tractor big enough. But that other side looks much more level and easier to deal with.
Ok I just looked at the pictures a little closer, had to zoom in to see what kind of orange saw that was. Turns out to be a child which makes the tree in question much bigger than I thought. Without knowing what you have for equipment to use I gots no real good suggestions. But I know if it was a tree I had access to I’d darn sure figure something out. But I have a tracked skid steer with a grapple
If you need to cut anything else in that area use that as a cushion log to save out breakage. If you have or can find an old plastic bed liner, rigged up makes a pretty good sled. So does an old plastic canoe cut in half for two sleds. You can move a lot of wood or heavy stuff. It could be made into a super cool bridge for the kids. Owl
Yeah it's a huge oak. As dumb as it sounds, I've processed three oaks at least this big already this fall, last thing I wanted to do was wrestle another..(especially in a stupid spot)
It is at the end of my 'trail' that we use in the spring to collect sap and we actually have to cross the creek right there to gather bags on the other side(currently use 2x12 planks when the water is too high). So the bridge idea has crossed my mind. I've dropped some less desirable trees across in different spots before to use as 'bridges', But it would be hard to watch all that primo firewood slowly rot away..
That's what I would do (and probably still will) if it was some place 'normal' to get at it. It's just pretty sketchy how it lays with the creek and so elevated off/on the banks.
With only an atv you can still do it but it will cost you some time. Simply cut into short lengths (whatever the machine can handle) and use a long chain or cable or whatever to pull. You may need to use a snatch block for some sections.
I've definitely considered this too! Going after it at an awkward/unsafe spot, with a saw/bar that I'm sure is going to be to short, trying not to get pinched the whole dang way.... Especially when I can get the 18' car trailer loads of hardwood blocks/cutoffs from the nearby Amish sawmill for $25 a load..
I agree that it would suck leaving that to rot, but if you are getting that deal from the mill, it's pretty easy.
Yeah my “splitter” can get anywhere I can go. I'd be able to get the wheeler and trailer right close to it. It's just getting it cut that's the problem..
