I wanted to see if I could build a cheap woodshed with fresh cut trees and repurposed materials and this is what happened. Started with sweet gum trees that choke out more desirable trees. I wanted to take them down but hate splitting them for firewood so I decided to use them to build. 1st attempted standing posts on cement blocks but almost killed myself when it fell and opted for digging holes. I was worried about the posts rotting so I burned the ends and painted with used oil. I'll be happy if it stands for a few years. I couldn't decide how to make a roof. I was planning to use a neighbor's old fence that he took down but it was going to be a hassle taking it apart and the posts were short. Here's where my crazy comes out. We had our roof and gutters replaced from a hail storm and being a hoarder I kept the old gutters. I was planning on using them for planters but never got around to it. I decided to cut them and open them up like sheets of sheet metal and.....boom......it worked!! I plan to use pallets for the floor and begin stacking. I'm not looking for totally water proof but need to keep the leaves and pine needles off my stacks. Otherwise I get this.
I LOVE it! Awesome job. Im all for repurpose/reusing stuff. Never thought of the rain gutters for roofing. Being a roofer ive done lots of gutters and scrapped a lot too. Ive seen firsthand the roll of metal go into a gutter forming machine and a gutter comes out the other end. Cool to watch.
Thanks Brad, I seem to look at everything in its simplest form and figured why not. Only took 3 days per sheet . Actually it went pretty quick after the learning curve of those sheet metal cutters.
I've tried growing plants in gutters. I got small versions of plants that bolt too soon. WTF good is that. Better use you have.
Burning the ends keeps them from rotting in the ground? If so that is good to know! I like the shed, especially using timber instead of lumber. It looks like the roof would work better if you put a cupped down in between two cupped up gutter sections. Just a thought for next time.
Hmmm, good idea. I may make this change. I still have the ladders out there and it's only 2 screws attaching each piece. One at the top and one on the bottom. Stay tuned.
Switched out the roof panels as suggested. I can't believe I didn't think of this . It actually measures 8' x 6' underneath the roof and should hold close to 2 cords if I stack high enough.
No, under the roofing...if you were to try to nail down the roof panels and want keep them in the shape they are now, you'd have to cut a 2x4 (on its side) with a "wave pattern" of sorts...just a poor attempt at a lil humor I guess...
